Today, we celebrate World Rhino Day.

Please add either a photo (no location given) or a story (again no specific locations) of a cherished encounter with these magnificent beasts. Let us also teach each other more about these animals, learning their history, and more about them.

Let us honour these amazing creatures of Africa under such threat presently.

‪#‎WorldRhinoDay‬. An estimated 200 people will participate in a march led by DEA, SANParks, the Mpumalanga provincial government, the Bushbuckridge municipality and local community leaders to the
Tulamahashe police station. A Memorandum will be handed over to the Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Brig TC Ntuli, to thank the SAPS for the work they are doing to combat rhino poaching, to
pledge support from DEA, SANParks and the local community to the police in the execution of their duties, and to call for more action to be taken to address the scourge of rhino poaching.

Part of this celebration for me is the arrests over the past few days of three different groups of Rhino poachers. I hope that more arrests will be made today and every day here after to eradicate this gruesome and revolting manmade threat that they are under.

May the World today make a stand against the idiotic users who create this demand for Rhino horn. Humans who are these idiotic and pathetic users of Rhino horn are supposed to be more intelligent.

Each and every encounter with Rhinos in the Kruger National Park is special to us because they are magnificent animals. I hope the day will soon arrive where they can be left in peace to be Rhinos again without existing in constant fear of humans.

May this World Rhino day bring good and prosperity to the Rhinos and the demise of the Rhino horn users and the poachers.

“Say a Prayer for the Rhino”

Say a prayer for the rhino: it’s coming again,
evil is stalking, seeking its prey,
full moon silhouette, giving her away.
Say a prayer for the rhino that she may evade.

With the night so long and the moon,
so bright
she’s aware of the sounds, footsteps so light,
she senses a demon…stalking her ground
closing so slowly, there’s danger inbound.
Hide the horn, burying her face,
look around, there’s no hiding place.

Where is little one?gifafrica
Scared running around
taps against belly
once Mom is found.
The fright, the scurry
the loudness, the sound!
Run baby run…
make your feet pound the ground.

So she’ll bolt and she’ll plunge in a headlong charge
at the upright two legged poachers at large.
And in the moment of loss and the panic of flight
acacia will break, more sounds in the night.
Fright empowered feet imprinting the clay,
each small sign gives her path away
for the evil following her in its gunsight this night
may bring to an end, another Rhino’s might!

Where is the little one?B n W rhino n babe
Scared running around
no taps against belly
no Mom is found.
The fright the scurry,
the loudness the sound!
Run baby run…
make your feet pound the ground.

As the Roller Bird ceases singing it’s song,
and the Oxpecker flies screaming alarm,
he binds himself to his mother’s speed,
as she seeks the cover they desperately need.
They’ve gone into the shadows,
they’ve gone into the night,
avoiding the expanse of the open plateau,
they find cover and silence their fright.
Say a prayer for the Rhino…,
Alive…, for one more night!

Thanks for that Jeanni!

And I agree, we need to say a prayer for our beloved Rhinos and to those who fight for their safety.
Long may they live to roam the African plains.

My hart cries for the rhino. Today and every day.

This photo was taken May 2012. It has special significance to me.
The little birds can fly away, but this gigantic creature can not defend himself against the poachers.
