LQ, we were following them from being on the Bots side and when we noticed they were heading for the waterhole, drove there and waited. Without budging in, here are a few of the waterhole photos. We did not see them again after they left the waterhole and went back to the Bots side!

Day 3 Part 5


We drove back to Mata Mata with a lot to be thankful for…….what a morning!!!

We booked in just after 14H00 and stayed in the camp till 17H00. We took a short afternoon drive, but except for all the usuals we did not see much.

Back at the camp the squirrels in front of chalet 2 were busy with their evening bath routine.





They were a pile of squirrels at a stage

1 rock monitor
7 Jackals
1 Cape Cobra

That night we were woken up by lions roaring in the dunes across the waterhole, but we never saw them.

Day 4 Part 1

This was the one day were nothing went according to plan. We were a few minutes to late the previous evening to fill up on petrol, so we had to leave the camp late today in order to fill up.

We drove down and it was really were quiet. We met up with our neighbours at Urikarus and had a nice talk with them at 14th borehole.

We haven’t drove far before the bakkie came to a standstill!! No power and would not even switch on.

A car from the front stopped and helped us. The petrol pipe has somehow became loose after we connected it again we made a u-turn and drove back to Mata Mata. SO took the bakkie into technical and I walked down to the chalet.

We drove out late afternoon just to make sure the bakkie is fixed. Again it was very quiet and for the whole day we saw only the usual.

A big male lion came walking down the riverbed that evening………..not a sound……..if the campers haven’t shown their flash lights on him, we would have missed him!!

Day 5 Part 1


Today we decided to go down to the lower dune road and then up the nossob and across the Upper dune road back to MM.

Not very far we saw this Gemsbok with his deformed horns.



At Kij Kij these two were sleeping away their morning!!

On our way back to MM just past Sitsas……………….what’s that in the road??

Another Rock monitor!!

It made a u-turn and went back up the left side of the road

I think that sums it up quite nicely!!!

How many leopards are we at in total at the moment?

Day 6 Part 1

Today we moved to Kieliekrankie.

At Craig Lockhrt a car was parked. It’s our neighbours at Urikarus!! Two young lions are laying in the grass next to the parking lot.

This one does not seem to be in a very good condition!!

The other one was more attentive and looked in a better condition, but still it did not seem as if they had a good meal for the past few days!!

We spend some time with them, but it seemed as if the early morning air made them sleepy. So we decided to move on.



This Gemsbok was running around with Christmas decorations on his horns!!



We made our way down slowly and saw all the usual suspects……..

Then at Houmoed………..



They were walking in the direction of the Leeuwdril 4X4 route exit. We waited a while and then decided to drive down to TR and book a Leeuwdril drive………we might just be lucky!!!

At the detour sign this one was looking for his lunch………I’m not sure if it fell down the pipe, because it looked as if it was trying to see down the pipe………

Pumbaa, just after the Rock Monitor sighting, as we were on our way back to MM, we stopped a car coming from the front. Before we could say any thing they said to us "And what amazing sighting did you have that you want to tell us about?" SO and I were a bit stunned and did not know if they were sarcastic?? So we said "we just now saw a big Rock Monitor, you might still find him at the same spot". Next they wanted to know if there is a bridge across a river nearby??? We were so stunned we could not answer!!!

A bridge across a river in Kgalagadi???? How long have these people been there????
