Day 1 part 2
We drove on to Urikarus………………booked in and unpacked the bakkie. At five we decided to take a short drive to the lions at the kill.............. On our way there this lion was laying under a tree a kilometre before the other lions. He was not going anywhere soon!!! ![]() The jackals have already got the memo on the midnight feast and they were waiting their turn in the riverbed ![]() Lions were still fast asleep and it did not look like they were planning to wake up soon........... ![]() We drove back and at the chalet the giraffes were at the waterhole and I had a feast taking loads of photos ![]() ![]() We settled for a nice braai and potatoes. The wind was quite strong and it was getting cold real fast!!! During the night we had first Giraffe, then a Cape Fox, Spingbok, BWB Six very noisy Hyena……….the quickest way to get people out of their chalets flash light in the hand is a Hyena whooping!!! After the hyenas the giraffes came for a last drink. We were sooooo excited with everything that we did not sleep very much!!! That and the cold.........in our long sleeve jackets and under the duvet and the blanket!!!! tbc............... |

Day 2 part 1
We were up and out of the “gate” by 7am. As we were packing the picnic basket we could hear the hyenas going up the riverbed………….so we decided to drive north to the lookout point and see if there is anything. As we came up to where the road crossed the river we so about 20 giraffe on the other side of the river ![]() At the bottom of the lookout road this jackal were having breakfast………..it does not look like something I would have enjoyed!!! ![]() At the top 4 Hyenas were sleeping. One of them got up and had a look around……….. ![]() The other three were snuggling against each other……. ![]() Are they not just beautiful!!! ![]() |

OK -- now I've caught up with the trip report
Fantastic pics LQ Cold ? At Uri ? Surely you jest ? You didn't lie there wondering what you were doing in a wooden cabin that the wind shrieks through when you have a perfectly good house at home -- with electric blanket & duvet Tell me you didn't OK -- I guessed 3 leopard & caracal & warthog Will give some thought to the 3rd guess .... |

Hi Lion queen,
Great to see another trip report from you. . You had some amazing sightings on your way to Urikaruus starting with the falcon kill at Houmoed and the lions at the gemsbok kill. Love the expression of the lions sleeping and daddy hold on to the carcass. My guess on the leopards must be 4 (April is the 4th month and today is 22 which gives you another 4) The animal you spotted was a warthog. Not unusual for KNP but defnitely for KTP. Can't wait to see those 4 leopards now. ![]() |

Day 2 part 2
We decided that we will be driving down to the top dune road and then across to the Nossob road, go south to Kij Kij and make a u-turn and come back the same way. So south we went from the view point. At yesterday’s lion kill, the lions were gone and this hyena and jackals were having feast. ![]() This one posed nice for us on the dune road ![]() The RHB were having a game of chase ![]() This cattle egret was having a nice time with the gemsbok at the waterhole. ![]() |

Just past Gunong we spot a cheetah with a springbok in the road, we must have missed the kill with a minute. The cheetah is not at ease at all and leave the springbok in the road and come and lay down under a bush next to the bakkie. We sat with him for quite a while before another car arrived. They must have thought we killed the springbok, because you could not see the cheetah.
![]() ![]() ![]() After a very long 50 minutes the cheetah eventually had enough courage to try and fetch his lunch. ![]() But every car that turned up made it fled back to the bush |

Down at Kij Kij 4 cheetahs just finished drinking at the waterhole and were walking to the Botswana road down to Rooiputs.
![]() ![]() This is for all you bird lovers These ducks were at Vaalpan. They were sitting in the road, but flew up when we approached. ![]() Then after a while they sat down again. ![]() ![]() I tried to do a head count and got about 28. The next day they were gone. Tbc……… |

Heksie wrote WOW LQ hyena and jackal ![]() And I will keep that in mind as well, hitting a poor innocent buck and then blame it on the predator that relaxes in the shade Love your kiekies ![]() And leave Cheetah in johies and take me with, with your next trip ![]() Heksie I know it's not funny when something like that does happen, but you should have seen their faces.........there this buck was laying in the road not a kitty insight.............and we were sitting in the bakkie on the other side!!............now remember that cheetah only made himself visible after 50 min.........as the vehicles came from the other side, the conversation went like this as we waved them to stop we: "Did you see the cheetah next to you under the bush??" Them each and every one: "There's a cheetah here??" We: "Yes right there next to you, under the bush" A lot of forward and backward driving then take place Them each and every one: "There's a cheetah here!!!!" We: "Yes we know we saw him first and told you about it!!!" ![]() |
