On Saturday 18 December 2010 the SANParks Honorary Rangers of the Lowveld region went on a Snare removal work party between Phabeni Gate and Kruger Gate.
They were divided into two groups that worked along the Sabie River over an area of about 20km long. SANParks assisted them with the field rangers for security. They removed 18 new snares and chased off four poachers that was fishing and confiscated 3 fishing rods and a bag full of fish. For them it was amazing to see how these poachers operate, about three weeks prior to this work party the Lowveld region removed about 96 snares in this area and this didn't scare off the poachers, the new snares were already up and going. For them it was a big privilege to be part of this team and to be part of the HR's and to feel that all the hard work done by HR's is appreciated by SANParks. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Very interesting!
Thanks for some insight into activities that happen behind the scenes. This sort of post makes the forum really special. |

Park rangers are constantly checking for snares, but HRs only help out from time to time. While we can help with a 'sweep' type operation, I suspect we actually hinder their normal activities so cannot do it too often!
