What a fantastic sighting Oumie
But what makes me even more jealous are the details of your 2014 trip. 2 1/2 month in Kruger

Cheetah mum and her 3 cubs.
H1-3 about 1km south from S86 southern entrance.
Was interesting viewing, they were VERY playful, running and playing with each other.
Were only 4 cars (the beauty of the central park, less traffic) for about 10 minutes until they walked off behind the reeds.

I have a question regarding the cheetah's claws: as far as I understand, their claws are semi-retractable whereas lions have protractible claws. In other words: in its 'regular" state cheetah claws are semi-visible whereas lion claws are usually sheathed by fur. Now the cheetah is able to "draw his claws in" while a lion may "push his claws" out - correct?

thanks

ice, I can't say that your comment is correct or incorrect, I wish I had the knowledge to  I have always understood and read that a cheetah's claws are "dog-like" and for this reason they are not very good tree climbers and may sometimes climb a tree with a slanted branch.

I also read in "Kruger National Park Questions & Answers" -by PF Fourie (Edited and revised by G De Graaff) the answer to the question "It is sometimes claimed that cheetah are not true cats. Is this so?" the answer very interestingly is "Cheetahs are true cats. The non-retractile claws of an adult cheetah and its method of hunting led to the popular misconception. Cubs can retract their claws and the loss of this ability in later life is an adaptation for running"

Hope this helps :)

Please see MZNP_Guides' post :

Hi me again!

If anyone has some good photos of the cheetah at Mountain Zebra NP and know which ones they saw (maybe told during a cheetah tracking drive or by a staff member), or even if you don't know, I would appreciate some to make a cheetah ID guide for visitors to the Park.

Preferably front and side photos, of the animal walking, sitting or lying. Walking or in an upright position is the best. The approximate location and date seen could also help us with the ID. This will also help us to know in which area the cheetah are, if seen by guests and will enhance the experience of visitors to the Park as they can get some info on the cheetah they spotted.

Photos can be emailed to me at charl.lyell@sanparks.org

Much appreciated!
Charl
