It does look like a buck from angle #2. Think a goats horns are thicker and shorter. Also has the shape of a duiker...???

On first pic looked like a goat but with this second one I'm having some doubts and does look like some sort of duiker.
Its difficult to tell its height from I'd guess about 50-60 cm.

Wonder if it was spotted again.

I spotted this photo in the Gallery:
Image
Taken by Hester Jordaan on 17 August 2008, just before noon on the Mbabhala Loop, Zuurkop in the Addo National Park.

Now I don't know if Hester is a forumite, but if she is I would dearly like to hear this story!
Aardvark in daylight, and active!

Ok...here is another image of the goat aka pale duiker. I have sent photos to 50/50 and the Get Away magazine but haven't heard anything. Looks like we're on our own!

hello guys,

There is a posting on Tue Jun 23, 2009 6:56 pm by Nannie

"Saw this on Monday on the S120 , the Steilberg road near B+D. Think it's a Mountain Reedbuck. The buck is pure white all over."

The picture is of a similar animal as yours as well as in the same area. :)

Now we happen to have someone on the forums that knows that area quite well of course; Lourens!

I popped off a PM in his direction, maybe he can tell us more...

Marjolien, no frontal photo?

Doesn't look like an albino animal, as there's colour. Most it can be is albinistic, maybe just a white one. If it was albino the mouth and such areas would not be black, but would be pink.

The horns almost curling backwards is confusing me. With both reedbuck (Redunca arundinum) and Mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula) the horns should tend forward, not backward! Maybe just a younger one. But the placement and angle fits both. Sort of. :hmz: Doesn't fit grey rhebuck, oribi or steenbok at all, so those are out.

And the horns seem to be placed wider than a duiker's would be. They almost seem to be placed ahead of the ears (mountain reedbuck), rather than between them (duiker).

The more I look at it the more I tend towards the mountain reedbuck, but a facial photo would have been nice...

Would like to hear what Lourens has to say.

WOW  .........thats definitely a unique sighting, do you maybe think it has something to do with a rare pigment, just like that in a white lion??

 Wow all! Thanks for all the input! Unfortunately I do not have a frontal photo (you can't have it all when photographing in the wild!), the ones I have posted are the best I have, although I do have a few more taken from a distance, but they're not very good. I think we can safely assume its not a lost goat! Makes sense about it not being a proper albino cos there is definately cloouring around the ears, and they eyes atc are brown.

PS had a stunning cheetah sighting on the same trip!!

Hi Marjolien, thanks for the pm, yes i'm sure it's the same buck. Here is another photo of it.On your last photo note how long it's neck is, also note the distance between it's hornes and ears.
