P@M,

Saw this interesting photo on the elongated hooves of the zebra mare.

We saw this zebra mare with a stallion in close attendance on the H10 some way before Nkumbi in Sept. Anyone else seen one with such overgrown hooves and any idea if it is laminitis ?
She was really battling to walk and lay down quite often.....

Can't think that I've really read about it in zebra, but it basically is for the same reason as you clip your toenails. They grow. Normally wild animals walking around on hard ground wear them off, but sometimes you'll find that they simply don't wear off, especially if the animal keeps to softer ground than would normally be the case. I've read about this often for eland especially, and I've seen it with sheep on the farm as well. Can't say I've ever heard of it in zebra though. But then, if it can happen with eland I guess it can happen with zebra.

An umbilical hernia can be seen quite clearly on the one Zebra.
Seen in Kruger in Feb this year.

Very interesting, perhaps some more info on this condition for interest sake(well actually i have no clue how this hernia occurs)

Mike, in our TR this is what Jock had to say on the condition.

Dotty wrote:
ps Ask Jock please, when you speak .......would the Zebbie with the hernia be in pain?and would he/she be in trouble later on?

Hi Dotty, Elsa has asked me to come and answer your questions and since the horses in hospital seem to be doing well, I have some time before my midnight treatments need to be done.

Many animals get an umbilical hernia which is where the umbilicus enters the abdominal cavity. This happens when the umbilicus dies off and the surrounding abdonimal wall does not close correctly. However, this zebra appears to have the lump further forward so this hernia could have been created by a weakness in the wall or a tear. The only danger with a hernia is if intestines loop into the hernia and then become intrapped. I think if the zebra was in any pain his/her condition would not be so good as animals in pain will often not do as well. Of course the above statement is in MHO and if anyone else has something to say on the matter, I would love to hear it.
