I have just read Dinkybird's 2007 trip report for the second time, which I think is still one of my favourite reports. However, in a recent magazine, a reader complained about the age restriction of 65. He says that, as a retired transmitter installer for the SABC, he has got about 40 years experience driving 4X4's through snow, mud, ice, floods etc, and now Sanparks tells him he is too old to do this trail, which is rated not even 1 out of 5 in terms of difficulty. Apparently, there are no restrictions on the Nuweveld route in the Karoo NP.

I quote "Unfortunately, querying this with Sanparks, would, in my opinion, only lead to a "corporate musical chairs" scenario and achieving nothing."

What are your comments?

AWB, I do not think it would achieve nothing if he did query it. It might be a blanket rule they have and if someone applies with a medical certificate to prove they are of good health, they will be able to do the trail.

I will see if I can get some comment on this from SANParks.

Thanks DB  I agree with you that a positive medical certificate should be the deciding factor and not age. A good friend of mine, who is 78 years old, regularly accompany us on trips to Botswana and he drives his own vehicle, packs and unpacks himself.

Btw, do they enforce the age rule strictly?

And how is this for a fast reply!

Hi Dalene,

Safety of the guests is the main purpose for these restrictions. This activity (Lebombo Overland Eco Trail) takes place in remote areas where it can very difficult to deal with any emergencies, bearing in mind that this involves self sufficient camping i.e. camping gear needs to be set up and packed up each day, lots of driving in between, the camps are unfenced, there is some walking involved (around places of interest) and it can be very hot. Other considerations include fitness levels, comfort to all member of the groups, etc.

We do allow people over 65 on the trail but then an additional medical certificate is necessary.

I cannot remember if we were asked ages when we booked or when we filled in the forms before setting off on the trail. But the reply from Andrew gives a good indication.

Sanparks does allow exceptions to the age limits . I have been on a wilderness trail where on of the trailists was a 75 year old gentleman and his not much younger or older wife who was able able to keep up with the average trailist with ease .

We feel very privelaged to have just completed the first magnificent Lebombo Eco Trail of the year. What a fantastic experience and even though it was very wet, we thoroughly enjoyed the different challenges that the wet weather presented us. The game viewing was superb, the camps well situated and the guide excellent. There are so many beautiful areas in the park that one doesnt see and this trail puts a whole new perspective on this magnificent conservation area. This is truly a pilgrimage that every Kruger National Park lover should undertake at least once in their lives.
Thanks to Piet van der Merwe and Sanparks for a great 5 days

We have done the Lebombo eco-trail when it started and would really love to do it again, but I am having difficulty getting through to the number provided for Hester and it seems her e-mail address link is not working. You people that did the trip recently, where did you do your booking?

Would anyone have GPS co-ordinates (S/E) of the campsites and various route waypoints for the trail ?
