There is also a pack in the Phalaborwa area, but I haven't seen them for about two months. :(

I acknowledge that I have been extremely lucky, but I always try to 'track' the doggies. In November they were 'hiding', but somebody told me about them and I was lucky enough to see them 90 minutes or so later, on my last morning in the park.

Just came back from KNP on Friday and we were lucky enough to see Wilddog twice,

1. on 2/1/10 on the S118 - first there were 7 on the road, they played around a bit for about 10 minutes ,and one even took a plastic bottle out of the roadway and put it on the side (even they know it is not suppose to be thrown out of the window for wild animals to play with!) then they all got very exited and the next moment another 4 came running straight from the bushes, it was amazing to see how they greeted each other, just like family! all 11 then stayed on the roadway for at least another 10 minute till we left to give the other tourists ( in the beginning we were only 4 vehicles, but when we left there were 8 also a chance to see them clearly.

2. on 5/1/10 on the Berg 'n dal road a pack of 7 or 8 - and what a commotion! when we saw them there were already 3 vehicles trailing them as they ran along the tar road, soon more joined. but the people according to me behaved very badly, those in front did not want to give up the perfect spot and those behind pushed forward and pushed in when they got the smallest of chance! one of the front vehicles actually started to overheat and had to stay behind, but in less than 15 minutes he was back in front - passing at least 25 vehicles to get there. Eventually we pulled into a no entry road and waited till the wildogs went of the road (just before berg and dal camp - about 9 km from where they started). not the best of times I remember in KNP but at least a sighting none the less!

Hi,

Was at the Park during December and was lucky to see dogs for the first time. I would recommend s25, I saw a pack of about 30 Wild dogs for about three days. And the tar road from Pretoriuskop to Skukuza saw about 9 of them. But its all about right time nad place. Good luck with your trip.

Not quite sure about that. Think they are more keeping to the places where they are regurly seen. Although they have a big range, they will definitly keep clear from ares where lion and hyena numbers are high.

One of the most elusive animals in KNP. They are extremely mobile, and so one needs to keep on looking and trust in your luck.

But there are areas where you have a better chance and some where you have less of a chance of spotting them.

The areas with a better chance are the areas which people tend to think are not that good for game viewing, because there are lower numbers of animals such as zebra and blue wildebeest.

There are areas where your chances are smaller: These are often the grassland areas of KNP. The reason why wild dog avoid these areas is simple: Lion. Lion are the wild dogs biggest threat, and number one reason for wild dog deaths. Large numbers of prey animals, supported by the grasslands, supports a bigger lion population. Wild dogs avoid areas with high lion numbers.

Very generally speaking the western half of the park is better. Areas such as Berg-en-Dal, Afsaal and Pretoriuskop, would give better odds on seeing wild dog.

We saw them 3 times. all on the H3 BD road to Afsaal.
Just keep on trying you will find them dont stop trying.
But the best place i think is BD. I was looking for them for 15 years found them the Dec 3 times and on the, the day we left the 2010-01-01. Saw them playing in dry river bed.
Dont STOP trying!!!!!!

Imberbe has a good point. The only place I have seen them in the eastern half is in the Croc Bridge area.
