Suggestion Needed on Garden Route

Unread postby Julian » Tue Jan 05, 2010 7:04 pm

We are planning to fly to PE on Feb 12. We want to drive from PE to Cape Town. We would have 2 nights on Garden Route. Could any one give us some suggestions about where we should stay? Storm River, Nature's Valley, Knysna or Bontebok? Is it the time to have whale sighting?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Julian,

I dont think you must count on whale sightings, being Feb and summer. As far as I know the whales only come round our shores during our winter months. But! I could be wrong, and I do hope someone else can give you better info in that regard.

As to where to stay, I would suggest Storms Rive and then Bontebok. This will give you two days leisurely driving, with plenty of time to explore the garden route along the way to CT.

Julian, I would suggest either Storms River or Nature's Valley on the first night, and Wilderness on the second. This may leave you with much more driving on the 3rd day than on the first and second (but I believe Wilderness is worth visiting before Bontebok). (I have stayed in all 4)

Thanks DinkyBird & Joshilewis!

I would select storm river as my first stop. But not sure stay in it one night more or move to Wildness. How long will it take to drive from Wildness to Cape Town?

Wilderness is also lovely. From there to CT it is +/- 400kms.

Hi Julian
Always a dfficult decision as to where to stay...
IMO all the parks mentioned are lovely but I think it will depend on what you want to see in that park. Tsitsikamma and Wilderness are along the coast whereas Bontebok is not. Tsitsikamma and Wilderness as well as Bontebok are all great birding spots. Bontebok does offer more on the game viewing of larger mammals though. Why not experience one park at the sea and one inland. Bontebok is about 3 hrs drive from Cape Town and there are few options as to which route you can take back to Cape Town. Have a look at a few trip reports on these parks....it may help you to make up your mind. :D
As DB said it is a bit late to see whales now.
Enjoy

Personally, I found Bontebok disappointing in terms of 'big mammals'. However, my priorities were probably wrong when I did visit the park.

I wouldn't recommend Bontebok as a game viewing park. If you do want to view game, maybe consider Addo for the first night instead of Tsitsikamma. Also, since you've got time constraints, you probably won't have that much time to explore any area.

Thanks Caracal & Joshilewis!

We would have one week game viewing in Kruger before we fly yo PE. Therefore, we would enjoy Garden Route's great coastal views. If there are some marine creature sighting in the route, it would be great!

As it would be in summer in SA at that moment, is it good for snorkling in Tsitsikamma? Any suggestion?

If you're adventurous and can spare the time, I'd suggest going kloofing (canyoneering) in Wilderness (with Eden Adventures).
The walking from Storms River Mouth is also excellent.
