I'm new to this thread (and forum for that matter), and some of the photos here are fantastic. I don't live close to any game reserves with lion, leopard, buffalo, etc, and am naturally jealous that I don't have a regular opportunity to have the same experience. So it's great to see some of the photos are being taken by those closer than I am.

When posting the photos, though. I'm sure it would help others to know what camera and lenses (make and type) were used for the photos. And some of the settings (ISO, aperture, etc) would help even more.

What do you think?

Hi Sean.Tucker

Welcome to the best addiction in the world

Can't speak for other mites, giving (or rather finding) the aperture, shutter speed etc is somewhat difficult-for myself I usually just point and shoot on auto. Can check out Exif data but as some mites post quite a lot of photos  , that sounds like hard work  Can I suggest that if you are interested in the details of any particular photos, that you request that, perhaps via a PM. I am sure mites will gladly comply.

For my part, I uses a Pentax K200D, usually attached to a Sigma APO 170-500mm lens and sometimes with a x2 Converter.

Where do your stay that you so far from game reserves? it would be great to know-many mites just need an idea of where. A country is good enough, a city even better

And after you have suffered from the side effects :hmz: of this healthy addiction, you will soon be planning, scheming, or whatever to get to a Game Reserve, and in particular KNP. Photos help! Being there far more therapeutic  Some mites have stronger words than "therapeutic". Nothing quite matches the thrill of a sighting, especially if it is "all your own" to enjoy. Been thinking of starting a thread for that subject.

Here's another to get you planning

Cheers

noel

Thanks for the welcomes, oddesy and noel. I live in Cape Town. We're fairly far from any reserves with the big 5 and some others like Giraffe, hyena etc. So we have to make do with some of the reserves here that stock the smaller antelopes like bontebok, blesbok and springbok. It's not that they don't offer any opportunity, but certainly the most effective seem to be the bigger (and more well known) animals and birds.

I've just bought a Nikon D5000 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses and am extremely chuffed with the camera. It's my first SLR since the film days (loved my old Pentax). But I believe I'll perhaps need a slightly longer lens (70-300mm or thereabouts) if I want to get some more effective wild life shots. That'll have to wait, though. Money!

I've always enjoyed photography but that slipped a little with the point-and-shoots I've had until now. So I'm trying to do a lot of catching up now.

Hi Sean, and welcome :D

It seems that Lion are soon to be added to the list of game in the "Karoo National Park". That might whet your appetite. It would be worthwhile to peruse our trip reports. There are some fantastic shots from all of the Sanparks reserves.. happy "hunting".

Thanks MM. Where did you hear that little snippet of interesting info (about the introduction of lion into TKNP)?

This old girl's a bit like me - rather long in the tooth and a bit the worse for wear. Glad to say my teeth are in better nick though...
