During the November wet and cold spell in Kruger NP when an estimated 1000 plus assorted mammals died due to exposure, vultures were rarely seen other than with full crops. What made this sighting at Nsemai Dam near Satara more special is that this obviously brimful African white-backed vulture also sported a tag (A092).

Large view

On inquiry, I got the following from the Birds of Prey working group:
- it was caught, tagged and released on 13 February 2007
- it was classified as an adult bird
- it was sexed a female (probably after blood sample analysis)
- it was one of 85 birds caught on the day, processed (measurements taken of various features and blood samples taken, tagged and ringed) and released.
- Place of release was the Moholoholo rehabilitation centre near Hoedspruit
- time between release and re-sighting was 3y9m11d
- the re-sighting is only 74 km away (as the vulture flies) from the release site.

problem is, pretty much all of my pics come from video footage, so by defintion they have a very low resolution; I'm afraid there is not much one could with enhancing software like photoshop. But I can still give it a shot, like with this one

I assume there are three different vulture species: white-backed (far left and far right), white-headed (second to the left) and ruppel's griffon (in the middle, with its head up) - correct?

thanks

African white-backed vultures, the lot of them.

The one with the white neck is a sub-adult, not a white headed.

Hi again Mattib,

Not a clear pic, but with the pale back I would guess that it's a White-backed Vulture. Are there any other pics of this one?

Hi Mattib,

I think it's big enough for one of the Vultures. I've seen Hooded Vulture with white backs like this one as well, but the pic is too dark to be certain of which one it is. The flight feathers and legs dangling down are also good pointers to it being one of the two I've mentioned.

Is this a white-backed vulture or a cape vulture?

General appearance is that of a white-backed vulture.

See this discussion about making an ID of white-backed vs Cape vultures. Give particular credence to the post by TG... he is an absolute birding boffin

I would say that is a White-backed Vulture.
Cape Vultures are much more heavily built and have pale eyes.

but I see the expert has given his advice already!

Thanks.
I think I'll then go for White-backed Vulture as well.

Thanks for the help!
