After Abrahamskraal we stayed in the Farmhouse Hotel in Langebaan, not the cheapest but a very comfortable way to spend our last couple of days in South Africa. A dirt road leads from the Farmhouse along the edge of the lagoon towards the park entrance, it proved an excellent place for birding in the early morning and the light was just right for some very pleasing shots.

Juvenile Common Fiscal


Common Fiscal, probably a first year male as it was singing and hasn't got a black back.


Karoo Scrub-robin - amazingly common in the park


Southern Double-collared Sunbird, a young male I think as it was singing.


Cape Bunting, took me until the last day to see this.


I just love mousebirds and this White-backed was particularly obliging.

You won't be sorry! Just make sure you're in Langebaan on a calm day so you can do the boat trip.

Oh and if you go at this time of year you might see these running around with chicks in the gravelly boat park next to the Farmhouse.

I must have had good luck with Spotted Eagle Owl because we had cracking views of one in the yard of the B&B we stayed in at Stellenbosch and then saw 2 more adults and a semi-fledged youngster in Kirstenbosch as well, so that was my 5th sighting in 2 weeks. By all accounts the pair in Kirstenbosch generally nest in ridiculous places so the young and adults are usually pretty obvious - a good place to visit if you're near Cape Town.

In fact I may post some bird pictures I got in Kirstenbosch, once I've worked through some more editing. Digital is great but boy can you end up with a load of images to work through.

But why not making only one thread insted of so many? I guess for people searching for information about this park a bit later it is easier to find same under only one topic

For example I often browse through very old topics in the search for some specific information - just a suggestion

I looked at the tutorial on posting trip reports where you use a small image and then link to a larger version when you click on it and it looked horribly cumbersome.

Having decided not to do that I was restricted to keeping the posts short with 6-8 images otherwise if I had tried putting all those in one post I suspect it would have taken ages to download.

If there was a simpler way of attaching images I might have put them all together.
