Matthew,
I will not take a caravan further than TR. Even if the roads further up to Nossob and Mata-Mata was graded, it turns into a badly currugated road within days.

Ordinary caravans no - off-road trailers yes beacause they are built stronger, but they also takes some hammering. I had a weld breaking - not serious, but it happens.

Hi all - thanks for all the advice given regarding the roads and a caravan. We have managed to get our entire booking transfered over to TR from Nossob. We leave in 9 sleeps !!! Cannot wait - we have been to Kruger and Addo plenty of times but this is our 1st trip to KTP !! We are going via 1 night in Namaqua - then 2 nights @ Augrabies then 9 nights @ TR. Will post a trip report and some pics when we get back ! We have bought a new digital camera as well. Any updates from anyone who has just been? - I have seen Droopy's report - was great.

Hi Matthew,
Good call moving to TR, I would not take a caravan any further.
We spent a week at TR only and had the most awesome sightings. Even saw the TR leopard stalk and catch a springbok! You will have a fantastic time.

In one of the local magazines I saw an article and pics where a guy attached and dragged a tyre just behind each of the two front tyres of his vehicle to "grade" the road surface for the caravan's tyres behind! 'n Boer maak 'n plan (A farmer makes a plan). Apparently it worked quite well. Maybe SANParks should supply a tractor tyre and those willing could drag it when they go out fo a drive!

I think it is a brilliant idea.

The workshops at the camps can make up a type of sleigh or trailor with two tractor tyres and a piece of rail that can be attached to the tow bar of a vehicle with two arms like an "A" frame

There can be about 10 of these per camp and when people move between camp volunteers can pull them to the next camp and somebody else can pull it back again

The parks employees moving between camps on a daily basis can also pull them. It will also cause them to drive slower.

With this maybe we can keep the roads in a better condition for everybody

I shall volunteer to pull one when I move between camps.

Any other ideas or what do you think of this suggestion
Regards
Daan

Nice idea Daan, the only problem is you cannot then reverse if the SO says "I think I saw a leopard in the tree we just passed"

We were going do a mixture of camping in a tent and fixed accommodation for our May 2010 trip. Due to circumstances tenting is no longer an option and we've also had to shorten our trip. Meantime we've acquired a small off-road caravan. We've changed our booking but at present can't get a camp site in MM so have to stick with our original 2 nights at KTC.
Question: will we be able to park our caravan at KTC - is the parking area big enough? Or will we have to / be able to leave the 'van in some parking area at MM? .

Hi ruthp
I really do not think you will have a problem parking your caravan at KTC..there is plenty of room.

Hi Ruthp,

There's plenty of space at KTC for parking your caravan, don't worry about it.

Hi all,

I'm sure I've read this somewhere before, but cannot seem to find the answer (So I'm just going to have to ask again)

We are planning a camping trip up to KTP for the first week in September 2010 and are unsure if we should take a standard road-going caravan or hire an off-road trailer. It's the longest we would have camped as a family & I want a solid camping base to work with (Rather than our Campmaster tents).

Will a standard road-going caravan cope with the roads? (TR to MM to Nossob over a week) or would an off-road trailer work best?

Regards

Richard

Fantastic Dotty... Thanks...

Looks like I'll be lucky to have any interior glass left and the caravan will probably take a massive pounding in the KTP roads.....

I guess this leads me down the off-road trailer rental route.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Hi RichardS
I don't have the time to find any of the many posts I have responded to re taking a normal caravan to KTP. They are probably in one of the threads Dotty has suggested.
So, right now, short and sweet...FORGET about even thinking of taking a normal caravan!!
Enjoy your trip.
