We saw at least 2 of these magnificent Birds on our last trip.

I saw this one in Kgalagdi 2002:

Iirc north of Nossob.

Saw a pair breading about two k's from Orpen in a tree not more than 20 meters from the road.

Saw two this weekend. One on the tar road from Satara to Olifants and then one on the S36 from Satara on the way to Muzandzeni

You need to get to the more arid parks to see lots of Secretary Birds.

As el Paco says, Kagalagadi is prime territory where you could see them in quite large groups (we have seen 5 in one group) and also to see Kori Bustards) but some of the Cape parks are also good.

Addo will generally deliver one (on the flat ground around Domkrag).

Although non-NP, I saw one last week on farmland visible from the N2 about 2km west of Port Elizabeth (just outside Kabega Park for people from the Bay) - nice to see in non-protected areas.

I have seen many in KNP. Don't even keep track of them in KNP anymore. Showed W@H a video the other day of a trip in 2001 or 2002. Pop there was one on it!

Best place I have always found them was in the Satara area. Just north of satara towards Olifants.

Had one running infront of our car in 2003 for a good 0.5 km. It would fly up every now and then and then glide back down. Eventually flew into a tree and sat there scanning the world.

Saw twice how they gave a snake everything but the kitchen sink in Kruger.

They are fairly common if you look in the right areas.

We saw one on the road to Tshokwane from LS ...

All our sightings in KNP have been higher up in the park, north of Tshokwane, Satara and higher.

Frequently seen in the KZN reserves.

Like WTM said, the Satara area. All of my last few sightings have been in that area. Also, years ago, on the Phalaborwa-Letaba road.

Seen near Ngotso dam in September.

Secretary Birds are the only raptors with long legs, their long central tail feathers characterize the way they fly, although they seldom fly. Adults have a orange-red face, while immature birds have a yellow face. Roosts and breeds on treetops & forages on small mammals.

This "convention" of Sec. Birds, about 18 of them were all gathered at the Kwang WH in Kgaligadi.

We saw Secretary Birds at Kiliekrankie Waterhole. Each day at 1 p. m. they came for a drink...

Saw this one in Jan 08 on the S108 near Orpen

I can't believe it has been so long since there was a post on this thread about these magnificent birds!

We were very fortunate to witness a Secretarybird catch and kill a Puffadder. It then systematically skinned the snake and swallowed it whole, a rare thing to see, I'm sure!
