Phew... Thank goodness!!!

deefstes wrote:I can't remember exactly where (I think it was Biyamithi) and I can't remember exactly when but it was within the last year or so, someone posted a Senegal Coucal pic on these forums that had us scratching our heads. Most of us, including me, was quick to ID it as Burchell's Coucal based purely on distribution, even though no barring was visible. Tertius Gouws eventually put us in our place by confirming that it was indeed a Senegal Coucal, well out of range.

The other thing I wanted to add is that I suspect, and I'm not 100% sure of this, that the barring visible on the secondaries that can be seen on this bird is probably sufficient to ID it as Burchell's Coucal. My understanding is that Senegal Coucal is unbarred not only on the rump, tail feather base and flanks but also on the wings in contrast with Burchell's which shows barring on all these areas.

VERY interesting, thanks Deefstes!

Burchell's Coucal claiming Chameleon as lunch

Unread postby Morkel777 » Sat Aug 22, 2009 5:37 pm

Hi everyone!

I recorded this incident recently in Kruger (July) and was wondering if anyone had ever seen anything like this??? The Burchell's Coucal was struggling wildly to pry the chameleon loose from its foot- and tailholds on the nearby branches. The chameleon wasn't giving up easily and the coucal seemed to give up (don't know if it came back) after trying for more than 20 minutes to wrest the chameleon loose.

Here are some pics:

Would love some feedback from all the serious birders on the forum!!

ME! But I am not a serious birder, just an enthusiastic amateur.

My dad & I were at his now favourite place in Kruger in June 2005, the Mantambeni hide. We heard a hissing sound and then looked down the front of the hide, and there was this BC uncovering a chameleon under the foliage. It took about 45 minutes to get to it and peck it to death then eat it.

Sorry, some of my dad's pics are not great.

Hi everybody. I need some help for the identification of some birds I saw during my honeymoon last July in Kruger Park, near Crocodile Bridge. I'm really new in birdwatching, so I surely did many mistakes in my identifications. So here you are some photos:

1. Burchell's Coucal

Hi Renard
in your pic 1 the burchells coucal is wet that is why the colours appear to be darker than they are but they are the same bird 1 and 9

Sadly it seems that our brave Coucal did not survive the cold wet weather that we had lately. She was last seen before the long weekend, more than a week ago!! :(

@ Morkel 777 - most of the birds in our garden loves grated cheese, especially the robins and the wagtails.

Don't be hasty naomi, they don't call it the rain bird for nothing.
