Remember KV, there are plenty of other quizzes where you can join in too - there are a lot of fun ones in the list which broaden the edumacation as I've discovered

OWN and I have been speaking on this one for a while.

Regarding the Kudu horns ... it is not that we want to discriminate against anyone ... so please do not take any offense ... ye horned ones! But we want to open the quizzes even more ... especially to those who are a bit hesitant because they feel they might be wrong / give a "stupid" answer etc.

Well we know the quizzes are not like that, but all do not and especially some of the new forumites are very hesitant. Using the horns is just a way of encouraging the new people to get involved, rather than the more established Forumites. It is not perfect ... but is an easy way and helps us to achieve our aim.

I think our more "senior" (I say that with all apologies) forumites will understand. And again ... there are PLENTY of other quizzes.

AFRICAT ... you are a SENIOR QUIZ BOFFIN, even though you are a newer member.

So, to all the hesitant / new / tentative ones ... come and enjoy!

BUT be careful ... soon you may achieve your first horns.

I'm sure OWN meant this quiz to make all newbies feel at home.

I won't enter any more of them then, because I take part in the Riddle thread, although not being at all familiar with SA wildlife I wouldn't dare enter any of those quizzes.

Anita, I want you to reconsider that. Yes, you are quite the boffin on the riddles quiz, but I can't think that I've really seen you participate elsewhere. You should have no qualms about participating. After all, you meet all the criteria.

TimePilot on the other hand...

I wouldn't call myself a boffin on the riddles quiz - just able to answer some of the questions sometimes, usually the easier ones.

No, I don't think I've ever participated in any other quizzes through lack of both knowledge and time! So if I'm not breaking any rules I'll drop in here when I can. 8)

@ Imberbe. Thanks for the invitation! I'll start off with this beginners' quiz and maybe progress to some of the others.

Everyone ... Imberbe has expressed the sentiments and intentions of this quiz magnificently   It was never meant to discriminate against anyone - only to encourage those who would feel more at home with others who are in a similar situation to them. And, from the names and postings I see already, I think this quiz is already working!

So, we'll all wait for TP's answer with anticipation

As there were no other answeree's we can move on.

Both answers given were almost what I was looking for but some additional information was required.

The steenbok does mark it's territory using it's pedal gland, but primarily I was looking for the fact that the steenbok covers it's dung much like a cat does. The steenbok may also defecate on other antelopes dung middens. This is done to disguise it's scent rather than as a territory marker (this is what my books tell me and also what several of the walking guides stated as well) - the apparent reason for this is that they live in a reasonably small territorial area and by covering their dung they are minimising their trail so that predators do not start covering their territory looking for them.

I hope that all makes sense - I'm writing in a rush as I have to dash to a meeting

As this is an OQ it does'nt matter whether anyone got it 100% so I guess it's the next to post

Nice one TP. I just want to add here that this also helps when looking at the tracks. A steenbok spoor is small with sharp hooves, but on older steenbok the hooves will be worn down into a rounded shape because of this.

Thanks for the info, TP. What a great place to learn this is going to be. :D
