I recently read somewhere that the Marico Sunbird relies heavily on the Wild Cotton Bush (Gossypium Herbaceum ssp. Africanum) to line their nests. The article went as far as to say that, without the Wild Cotton, Marico Sunbirds could suffer a decline in numbers: I suppose not enough insulation in the nest to protect the babies = higher than normal nestling mortality?!? I found this fascinating, to say the least!

I have since planted a few seeds and hope to hit potluck with them growing. Although we don't have any Marico Sunbirds here in Amanzimtoti, I'm sure the other sunbirds will also make good use of the "cotton balls" surrounding the little seeds.

Kind Regards

lee lewis

Since I am here, can I ask for a few more?

These were all seen at the Blyde River Canyon resort in September.

Hi Darth,

2. From what I can see, I'd opt for Marico, but not sure on this one at all.

Large view

I took this shot at Letaba Camp entrance on Aug 10 at midday and without real scrutiny filed it as a Marico sunbird. :hmz:

I have been queried on that ID and now I am flabbergasted... That broad red band is the confusing issue! Let's hear what you think, forumites... and please justify your thoughts

I would go with Marico. Maricos often have a red breast band and not purple as described by some field guides, just check out google images or www.birdpics.co.za and you'll see that the males mostly show bright red breast band. The only other contender here is Shelly's Sunbird which I can't rule out 100%, except they usually show a broader red band.

Thanks for your input, MattAxel. Especially that first example in your link has exactly the same shade of red. I guess that is some detail the fieldguides could pick up on. At least I can now answer the query with some confidence. Shelley's it is not... my bird's bill is way too long... and then there is the distribution issue!

Must be Marico Johan, true the only other look a like is the Shelley, but indeed there hasn't been any recording of a Shelley's ever in South africa according to Seasol.

Johan v R - that "Marico sunbird" of yours. I've been reading & looking up and I wonder why it can't be a Greater Double-collared Sunbird? The only issue I can see might be the distribution and it can always be a first for you!

Bobbi, I can't see JVR's photo, but the belly of a Marico Sunbird is dark and the belly of a Greater Double-collared Sunbird is grey. That should distinguish the two species.

WTM - the photo of the Marico Sunbird is on the previous page but anyhow you're right, Johan's bird has a dark belly and if thats the deciding factor it is indeed a Marico! Thanks for the patience!
