Just to make sure veryone knows, the first picture i posted is f a White Browed Robin chat

Allow me to throw in one:-

This bird is one of the common birds in Kruger and can be seen hopping about at picnic sites and in the rest camps. They are not shy or elusive and will show themselves freely. They are quite noisy and can be heard over a long distance with a caracteristic call.

To help in identifying this bird firstly look at the general shape and posture of the bird. As with most birds the bill shape and size is the next focus point.


Next step would be to look at features that makes it different to other birds in the same family like color, size and other identifying features.

Southern yellow- billed hornbill ? It is the only hornbill that has the red spots, spotted feathers and a nice yellow bill.

Oops...... just have to finish off the last one.

Well, that is easy, grey heron?

"Spot" on
The yellow bill is diagnostic with the male having a larger ridge on the bill than the female while the youngsters have dusky patches on the bill. It is these little trivia bits that take birding to a different level and often the only way to positively id a bird.

Here are a few of their cousins see how you do with their id. All pics were taken in Kruger.








See if you can determine whether it is a male or female or even a juvenile

This will take a little longer - Of the three southern ground-hornbills the one in the middle is a juvenule, as it has not yet develloped the red markings?
I'll come back with the rest, maybe, when I find out where to go and fetch it

The grey hornbill is a male - white patch on the upper part of the bill.

Here is a few more maybe if we take it group by group it will help?

Another easy way to tell them apart is the female has a red tip as if she is wearing lipstick. The grey is the only small horn bill with a dark bill and a creamy stripe on it. Juveniles are similar to adults but with slightly smaller bills

1. Black headed heron
2. Purple heron
3. Little egret
4. Cattle egret (young, the bill is not yellow?)
