Twee rivieren to Pretoria is 1381 km, and according to the Shell Geostar site it'll cost you 16 hours and 46 minutes. I assume that's without taking a break...

Add Mata-mata to Twee Rivieren, which will add about 2 and a half hours... Plus sightings, getting the tires back to the correct pressure...

I go long distances more than most, and I think it is a bit too far.

We do 2R - CT in a day and CT - Nossob, but then we leave at 2h00, which you cannot do from MM.

2 years ago we did some insane long distances in SA and we did manage but it wasnt nice at all. I was deadly tired when we reached, for example, Addo NP and we didn't even do the night drive (it was planned).
With insane i mean 1100 km on one day...

This year we did have some weird and long connections which we did rebook so now longest drive on a day is 350 km. Much more relaxed and saver!!

I think it can be done. It just depends how much you like driving.

I also travel long distances 'more than most', and always alone. (Lots of Joburg to Cape Town without stopping over anywhere- my record is Durban-Joburg-Cape Town all in one go, alone with no sleep).

I found the drive from TR to Roodepoort to be very comfortable, and I made it home in time for supper and evening church, not tired at all. Coming from Mata Mata, you obviously need to add a few hours, but they'll be slow and relaxed hours

The N14 towards Pretoria is completely beautiful (well, the first 500kms or so), and should keep you happy and awake.

Will you be sharing the driving with anyone? If you are, I don't think your plans will be a problem

Thanks for all the replies. My Garmin Mapsource gives me TweeRivieren as 1083 if via Upington, and a shorter 957 if via Hotazel. I did the R31 two years ago and it was a fine road (they were busy tarring a large section of it). At the end i think i will maybe sleep over in Kuruman - just a bit more relaxing. I am used to drive from Pretoria to Aroab in Namibia in one day going down, and Kuruman to Pta back in one - hence i thought Mata Mata might just work. Anyone drove the R31 as of late and can give an indication as to its condition?

I did KTC (which is close to Mata Mata) to Pretoria in 2008. Was in March so left as "gates" opened (think it was 6:00) and was in the south of Pretoria (Moreleta Park) at 5:15. I travelled via Upington on that occasion but normally do the Van Zylsrus route. It can be done, although a bit long. I would always rather stay a day longer and drive through

I have done it. Took the dirt road through Hotazel.
It is a very long drive and you will need 2 drivers.

Just to let you know that there were hordes of Namaqua Sandgrouse at Samevloeiing..in the evenings just before sunset. Plenty of groupd coming in to land...having a quick drink and then taking off again. Quite vocal as well !!!! This was during the last 2 weeks in June.

I am in KTP in middle August. We start in 2R and then Nossob. My first trip. Which road is closed?

Ben, the direct route to Nossob is clased as far as Kij Kij.

You need to take the road towards Mata Mata, and then cross over to the Nossob river on either one of the two Dune roads.

We used the upper dune road last week and this section was the least corrugations of all the roads in the park. Although some of the roads were 'graded' just 4 days before, they were already badly corrugated when we were there.

Again saw a large number of vehicles where drivers just ignore the request to deflate tyres to 1.6 bar

I am leaving for KT in a weeks time and will post an update on the roadworks. Personally I hope that the road is fixed as I remember from last time that travel distances in KT are very long.

13.10.2007 we left TR at 06:30, after 1.113 km we reached at 19:00 Pretoria Hatfield. IIRC it was a saturday. A long, boring and luckily uneventful trip. But from MM? I think, this is to far.
