Sightings of white lions in the wild are extremely rare, since the white gene is a recessive gene, and white lions have a diminished chance of survival in the wild. But the bloodline is present within the wild population in Kruger National Park, and not only in the captive animals whose fore bearers was taken from the wild and who are now being bred for this trait.

The aim here is to establish a database of sightings of wild white lions, for future reference.

As much as possible information should be given:

Where, when, information about the pride, photo's, video, etc.

Are there still white lions in KNP?

There is info about white lions all over the net and in books but would i be correct in assuming that if both parents carry the recessive gene that there is a 25% chance of having a white cub?

most interesting - I wonder when last there was one spotted? Didn't know there was the possibility.

Hi all, we saw a white lion close to Bangu beginning April, as soon as we can work out how to post a video Scipio will post it here. The sighting was reported to Sanparks. Scips is just a bit busy with a lot of peeps coming from the East to visit our fair country next week.

Oh WOW!!

This Lioness was not completely white, however she was much lighter than
the other Lions. We saw her on the H1-4 near he S127 Timbavati turn-off
in October last year.

The white lion gene seems to always have been in the Tshokwane -Timbavati sector.

Bangu would be a newer area, I think!

It is definitely a paler female...but not albinistic. Don't know the reason...

I will go and catch them on in June!!

Great to see some white genes again.

The colouring of these white lions is not strictly albino-which is an absolute lack of pigmentation,but is very light in colour stemming from a rare gene that is found in both males and females.When lions carrying these same gene mate,the result is a white cub or cubs.This phenomenon seems restricted to the Timbavati/Tshokwane/Letaba areas.In the same areas,there have been validated reports of atleast 3 other white animals-kudu,buffalo and giraffe.

Saw an adult male in the mid-80's on either the Vutomi S33 or N'waswitsontso S125 loops. Is a bit long ago and can't remember the exact road. It might even the same one as in bornfree's pic.

Got my grandfather's 8mm movie of our sighting at home somewhere.
