Sightings of white lions in the wild are extremely rare, since the white gene is a recessive gene, and white lions have a diminished chance of survival in the wild. But the bloodline is present within the wild population in Kruger National Park, and not only in the captive animals whose fore bearers was taken from the wild and who are now being bred for this trait.

The aim here is to establish a database of sightings of wild white lions, for future reference.

As much as possible information should be given:

Where, when, information about the pride, photo's, video, etc.

Hi everyone,
have had these images scanned from my Dad's slides. Cant give dates, but the female was in the Timbavati area, the cub and mother in the Tshokwane area(if you look closely, she has another cub of normal colour as well) and the male on the Vutomi loop, a long time ago. Quality not good but enjoy anyway.

Bornfree.

There is info about white lions all over the net and in books but would i be correct in assuming that if both parents carry the recessive gene that there is a 25% chance of having a white cub?

Hi all, we saw a white lion close to Bangu beginning April, as soon as we can work out how to post a video Scipio will post it here. The sighting was reported to Sanparks. Scips is just a bit busy with a lot of peeps coming from the East to visit our fair country next week. :)

This Lioness was not completely white, however she was much lighter than
the other Lions. We saw her on the H1-4 near he S127 Timbavati turn-off
in October last year.

Nice thread, Imberbe!

The white lion gene seems to always have been in the Tshokwane -Timbavati sector.

Bangu would be a newer area, I think!

Well done and welcome, Siobain!

It is definitely a paler female...but not albinistic. Don't know the reason... :|

Great to see some white genes again.

The colouring of these white lions is not strictly albino-which is an absolute lack of pigmentation, but is very light in colour stemming from a rare gene that is found in both males and females. When lions carrying these same gene mate, the result is a white cub or cubs. This phenomenon seems restricted to the Timbavati/Tshokwane/Letaba areas. In the same areas, there have been validated reports of atleast 3 other white animals-kudu,buffalo and giraffe.

Saw an adult male in the mid-80's on either the Vutomi S33 or N'waswitsontso S125 loops. Is a bit long ago and can't remember the exact road. It might even the same one as in bornfree's pic.

Got my grandfather's 8mm movie of our sighting at home somewhere.

I have mentioned to one or 2 forumites. but for those of you interested.

We spotted a 5 lions 2 males, bigger then the lower sabie gents, and 3 females. one of the was a white female, i have seen a pic of her on the forum(had no camera, stopped 2 other cars but they didn't have cameras either.) they were about 2 m in the bush, 600m from shimangaweni(spelling) water hole, wednesday 28 october around 14:00.

RobertT saw the 2 males earlier on a kill but not the females.

one of the cars i stopped mentioned he had seen them earlier and also thought she was a timbavati white, and now he was sure.

i have just ended a three year stint working in the northern timbavati, and the most disapointing thing about leaving was the sudden arrival of a pride of lions with two white cubs! we initially suspected them to be from a non-comercial eastern section of the reserve where the camp staff have mentioned the presence of white lions, and based on their initial behaviour of moving to and from the eastern section seemed to back this up...the only strange thing was the fact that they were very relaxed with vehicles, which shouldnt be the case if they came from the quiet eastern section...we now think that they are a pride of lions from Ntsiri (umbabat. just north of the timbavati) called the timbavati pride, and that would explain a lot...the reason for suddenly shifting their territory 15-20km south ws the arrival of three young male lions that had already killed off our old resident pride....the two timbavati lionesses and their four cubs probably ran east, then south, then moved back west adn werent pushed out of the area where they now reside as the sohebele pride had been killed by these three new males...

long story short, there are two healthy, 10 month old cubs living in the northern timbavati and are providing guests of the private lodges sightings on an almost daily basis...you just got to love Mother Nature...we were so upset that our lion pride had been killed, but knew that eventually new lions would move into the area...just didnt think it would happen so quickly, and only ever dreamt it would be the white pride form the north!!!

here are some pics

 Saw an article on them in the Kruger Park Times recently! Thank you for the photos! These are true white lions and not albinos! It shows you, the genes are there, in the local population!

Ex Ranger Fanie Botha has a film and a few photographs of a white Lion taken at Kloppersfontein many years ago. This proves to me that they are/were not restricted to the central western area of KRUGER.

Great pics of an unusual sighting -- thanks

My cousin also saw white lion cubs on a private reserve in Timbavati during Dec.

LOL, yeah liesl, beginning to miss the bush, and only been back in joburg for 2 days!!!

p@m, i am pretty certain that your cousin would have seen these same two cubs, as the only other confirmed white lions in the timbavati are based mostly in uncommercial areas...these two cubs are centred in the area traversed by the three northern private lodges in the timbavati, motswari, kings camp and simbavati river lodge...
