In the latest ed. of *WEG* magazine (#13) there is a little article on GLP (Greater Limpopo Park).
Interesting to see about the Shingwedzi 4x4 route and also a Massingir walk trail - 5 day trail starting in Mozambique and ending in Letaba. (Apparently already open for booking for March 2006) You must be able to walk 15 - 20 km's a day carrying your own food, clothes and sleeping bag.

Also 101 camping tips... from the newest gadgets, what to buy, how to plan, what to pack etc etc!!

Nearly finished reading all the articles. This is the best outdoor magazine in my opinion.

This morning I though it might be a good idea to try and sort out the camping tips on the Forum and send it to them for the next 101 Camping tips issue.

Quite a project you are starting there....

I get my moneys worth out of it, because it takes me absolutely ages to read as I am not used to reading Afrikaans.

It certainly has got very popular and is giving Getaway a run for their money.

Can't wait tp be able to go thru' kruger to Mozambique and apparently there will be a tar road to the coast? its the answer to my prayers, I can visit kruger and then hubby can go surfing
and Iam, agree WEG is better than Getaway, buuuut talking bout GETAWAY, did anyone see the winning letter this month? NOT good PR for Kruger!(Sorry to wonder off the subject!)

Haven't seen the letter yet (our copy has yet to make it though the post) but I feel that the target market for Getaway has drifted from the sort of people of enjoy the NPs in general and KNP in particular.

I’d always wanted to walk in the bush among wild animals and got my chance when I booked onto the Wolhuter Trail in Kruger. What should have been a wonderful experience turned out to be a very traumatic one.

On the second day we came across a white rhino cow and her nearlly fully grown calf, sleeping on the ground under a tree. The ranger explained that should they charge we should run behind bushes we were close to.

The next minute the wind changed and all hell broke loose. Both rhinos charged. About 11 shots were fired. The cow was killed and the calf – which hit me on the back of my thigh before running off – was also shot at, but hopefully survived.

I don’t blame the ranger, who did what he was expected to do. But the point is – how many wild animals are killed each year due to incedents such as this?

I now believe walking and cycling should be stopped in wildlife areas until a solution is found to deter charging animals. In hindsight, the Land Rover that transported us was very pleasant and we actually saw more animals than when we were on foot

In which month's Getaway was this letter

First of all Landrovers aren't used in Kruger, Nissans are. Secondly when did this happen? And thridly who wrote it?

The Getaway letter writer wants walking and cycling in reserves stopped until a solution can be found for charging animals ? Eish!

I would also like to know who the trails ranger was and the story that they should run to the nearest bushes sounds very suspect. None of the trails rangers that accompanied me ever gave such stupid advice.

As to the vechiles, many people will not know the difference between a open safari conversion Nissan or Landy

@*$%@*&# what do these people think... it is the zoo???

Makes me sooo mad if people say this... the whole purpose of a walking trail is not seeing the big 5 lying down right next to you ( ok great if that happens) BUT to get the real bush experience and seeing small and interesting things you DON'T see inside your vehicle.
Can't tell people how much you learn and see during a walking trail that you just don't see / miss when in a car!
