What is the etymology of the name:
Alcelaphus Buselaphus?

[aka: the scientific name of Hartebeest]

There are six or seven subspecies of Hartebeest, (n)one of which occurs in southern Africa.

The Red Hartebeest is considered a distinct species (Alcelaphus caama) by some, a subspecies (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) by others.

The scientific name of Lichtenstein's Hartebeest is Alcephalus lichtensteinii

As far as the etymology is concerned, my best guess is:

Alces (elk in Latin) + Elaphos (deer in Greek) = Alcelaphus.

Bos (ox in Latin) + Elaphos = Buselaphus.

Hey everyone!

The only one we've ever seen was on the short sand road to Renosterpan, off the H3 in 2004! He was curiously right inthe middle of a herd of Impala!

I believe there around sixty individuals at present!

I saw this lone one by pretoriuskop.

we saw this 1 in 2006, I can´t remember where. We were the only people there!
Is this male or female?

Yes, I remember we stayed there for a night!

I have seen a single individual of the Lichtenstein's hartebees just north of Mooiplaas waterholes, close to Mopanie. It was in company of a lone Tsessebe. Will post a picture later. Was difficult to take a pic of though, as they were finally moving away from us after he have identified it..

Being a guide in the park from 2000 to 2007, I show most of the antilope in the PK area. Most of them when they did the fire breaks along side the Napi road between 2 and 5 Km from the Pk Numbi gate road. Also the Circle road that runs aroad the camp it self. The only other sithing I had of these antilope that were not in the PK area was in 2006 on the H3(Skukuza Malelane road) 2km north of the S113. Was very suprize as this was the only sighting between our private guide's from outside the park that have not been seen around the PK area. We also Know of same of them up north in the park but havent heard of anyone that have seen them up there. Over all for rare antilope Pk is your best bed. Regular sightings of Sable, Tessebe, southern reedbuck and even Eland that can be seen on the Voortrekker road that runs from PK to Afsaal is also find from time to time. When I left in November in 2007 there was an article up at Lower Sabie saying that the park has released Blue Duiker also in the Pk area, but havent spoken with anyone from parks board that could confirm that

There is also n incloser that is fench off between 2,5km and 3km down the voortrekker road from the PK area that have Lichtenstein's Hartebees in. This camp was originally build for white rhino that was reintroduce in 1961 into Kruger. They now use it for there Lichtenstein's Hartebeest breeding program, if you desperate to see one this will be your best place as they are often seen along the fens of the incloser.

Saw 5 of them on Friday 15 May 2009. Sighting was on the H2-2 (Voortrekker road) near Pretoriuskop.



Saw a few years ago near Punda Maria as well.
