Trying to sort out my photos and came across this. My best guess is a Wahlberg's pale variant - but it was taken last June and I thought they were a summer visitor.

If you look in Sasol 3rd Ed under African Hawk Eagle it gives quite a nice illustration of the juvinile and you can see that the bird in question is def a Juv African Hawk Eagle.

Nice pic peterpiper. African Hawk Eagles are normally seen in pairs, so next time you spot one have a look around and see if you can find it's mate close by. It's also another helping ID point if you see two you can bet it's an African Hawk Eagle.

This one was ID'd as a AHE as well, but I did not see it's mate:

In December I saw my first ever AHE pair in Kruger.

The only others I have seen were July 2005 in Pilanesberg, and July 2004 in Damaraland, Western Namibia.

Anyone else seen any?

African Hawk Eagles are fairly common in the North and extreme South of the Park. Having said that we have seen a couple of pairs most days while camping many times at Balule. If you see one there is normally the mate close by. 90% of the aerial sightings are of 2 birds. This trip we saw 4 pairs of which 2 were on the Mahonie Loop every day. I took a night drive at Punda and we did the Loop and found one bird roosting on a branch over the road and I didnt think of taking a pic as it would have been perfect as it was very close and partly illuminated by the headlights of the vehicle. We carried on for 200 metres and true to form there was its mate but this time sitting 40 metres away out of the Headlights which put huge pressure on the range of my flash so the details are not what they should be.

Please tell me if you think this is AHE, a terrible pic but it was a windy grey day in Nov last year on the Orpen - Satara road.
Was definately white all the way up it's front and had light spots on the wings.

Freda it certainly has the size of the AHE but its hard against the overcast sky to see whether the head is dark enough. Also the beak doesnt look like an Eagles at first glance. The good news is that if this bird was taken near a big expanse of water you should be investigating an Osprey which were seen often at Pioneer dam this summer. I'll have another look just now and apply my mind. I'm no good on a Sunday night.

Back again ...90% sure it is AHE ...bill now looks right to me after looking at BB's daylight pics. Was there a mate around ...Ospreys are normally solitary but I mostly see my AHE's in pairs...I'll wait for confirmation from the others but I think Freda it would be OK for you to sharpen that pencil in readiness of another tick

African Hawk-Eagle?...and before Deefstes disembowels me it was taken between Mopani and Letaba in mopanie veld. Sorry quality isn't better, zoom extened to max

I'd say so, yes. The streaking appears to be quite bold even but it is not an Ayre's Hawk-Eagle because the legs show no streaking at all.

Ok I know this is an African Hawk Eagle...correct me if Im wrong...

But is this one in flight?

Now THAT looks much more like an African Hawk-Eagle to me! Some streaking on chest, the right underwing pattern and even that funny head looks right.

The one in flight I would go with your African Hawk Eagle. The reason for me saying so:

The dark terminal bar on the tail tip.
The white distinctive white panels on the upper wings (picture 2).
The plain flight feathers.
The dark trailing edge of the wings.
