We bought one of those cloth maps on KNP to put in our son's bedroom the last time we were in KNP (almost a year ago now, but still pretty recent in terms of the map).
It's really outdated - Phabeni for example, which has been around for a couple of years already, wasn't on it. The map is almost exclusively labelled in Afrikaans - no English version available according to the shop assistant - which makes me think it possibly even predates 1994?
In any case, I wonder how many international tourists would like a copy in a language they understand.

I keep forgetting to post this, but have been wondering if there will be an updated version of this wall map coming out sometime?
We love the map, and Mikey loves being picked up to point out all the different animals pictured on it.
But if a new version became available we'd be queuing up to buy it 8)

They are great for quick references while reading someones report. :D

Now that is a 8) idea, Elsa!! I unfortunately don't have enough wall space near my computer. My cloth KNP map hangs in my kitchen — and I'm glad to hear that there's a comparable KTP one, will definitely plan on getting that!

I'm always digging out my KNP map book to check references — and I don't have a decent KTP map, just the printout from this website

The 1941 map still shows Rabelais gate in use and the 1975 map indicates that 40 km's should be adhered to on all roads - a rule I personally believe should be resurrected for tourists and staff alike!
Lots of name changes and different spellings as well as Balule being reserved for Non-Whites only!

I have found and scanned two tourist maps One of 1947 and one of 1970.
If any one wants them please Pm me with e-mail details and I will gladly send them on .( they are quite large if you want any detail.) The 1970 one has been marked with our trip we took on our honeymoon !!

Penny mailed me a lot of maps, have a look:

Note the names in South African as well as the Rabelais gate still in action!

1975
The 1975 maps is one of the original tourist maps bought at the gates. Note the Afrikaans language dominates, 40 km speed limit on all roads, the spelling of a lot of the names and the fact that Balule was still only for "Nie-Blanke". The animal numbers also make for interesting reading.

I would like to compare with the 1978 map that I have copies of .
Perhaps take some digital pics and post them ?

On my first visit to Kruger in 2003 the family booking in ahead of me had a map from 1963, the date they first visited. The staff at the gate were amazed and studied it for ages. If only I knew then what I know now my camera would have been out. Ah well.

While browsing through my notes and papers I came across this old map of the KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, going back to the 1960s. It has really brought back very fond memories.

The cover.

This map was also given away with the book The Kruger Park and other national parks by RJ Labuschagne published in the 1960's.

Thebi, maybe this is could be where I got mine.
Oom Lappies was a very knowledgable and intresting man.
My copy of the mentioned book is one of my proud collection.

It has many interesting articles and historical photographs of places and people and fauna and flora.

I think you will find this very interesting....

My SO happened to be browsing in an old antique shop in White River a while back a struck gold !!
An old map drawn up in the Surveyor Generals Office in 1928 !
It is fantastic and now proudly hangs in my diningroom.

I would like to share the following with you all:

* The map is broken up into 7 sections it seems.
1 is down south and 7 is up in the far north.

* What game is found is also on the map which i find fascinating.
Up north was 'Inyala', Elephant, Giraffe, Tsessebe, Eland, Roan and Rhino.
I thought Rhino were almost wiped out in KNP in 1928.
The most fascinating animal to be found there ,according to my map, is Rhebuck !!!
They are apparently found on the Crocodile River.
Did they in fact mean Reedbuck perhaps??

* There is a ' Jack's Kraal' near Olifants ( which is not on the map), a police station at what could be Balule, further south Habonis George's Kraal and still further south, Puhlela's Kraal.

* Tshokwane is called Strasburg! Why?

* There is a ' Rest House' at the present day Lower Sabie.

* There are 'Lion Proof Shelters' all along the Open Road from Satara to Klaserie.

* There is a little inscription on the map and it reads: " Found in all suitable places; Lion, Leopard and other carnivorous animals, Klipspringer, Reed-Buck, Bush-Pig, Bush-Buck, Steen -buck and Duiker."

I love my map.....
