Just google car hire in upington - there are a few. We did that road in a Pajero no problem. You must have a proper offroad 4x4 with high clearance. Its not technical - just a bit sandy - make sure your tires are nice and soft...

thanks a lot . a second one is fully booked, too. let's hope it's not gonna be the same for each of them. ps :do they deflate and reinflate the tyres in Twee rivieren petrol station? ps : everybody agrees that Toyota Hilux is the best choice. what a bout a nissan Hardbody ? equivalent?
Defender less bumpy on tracks.. but any 4x4 will do fine at the Bitterpan track, just back from the park (and Bitterpan). The exit road from Bitterpan towards Mata Mata did have some more challenging dunes. I did not lower the tyre pressure of my Defender Td5 though (which is however recommended) and only used low range once. With deflated tyres it would have been easier.
Bitterpan is a nice camp, Willem, the attendant did wake us up for lions drinking next to his hut. Later we did see a big male and a female drinking at the pan, nice :-) Will post some images at my blog soon.
The brand of vehicle is no issue - Tyre pressure is!! On sand keep good momentum with low tyre pressure - typically 1 bar or 1.2 at the most. Make sure you have a compressor for re-inflation. Re-check pressures once going, as heat plays a major role in the pressure.
