Etienne Marais and Faansie Peacock have just released a new book, a must have!:

The Chamberlain Guide to Birding Gauteng

Sounds like a good book to have if you live in Gauteng.

Looks awesome! I am getting it tomorrow morning from Faansie Peacock. It's draw-your-wallet time for us birders: the first copies of the Roberts Bird Guide, Kruger National Park by Hugh Chittenden & Ian Whyte are on their way on a ship from Singapore and are expected to hit the shelves late next month! Good thing that bird books are ridiculously cheap in SA, compared to most other good things in life.

The book was just given 'airtime' on Radio Sonder Grense. Sounds like a must have in Gauteng. Not available in bookshops just yet. They're trying for Christmas. In the mean time it can be ordered from www.gautengbirding.co.za

Ordered my copy this morning.
Hope it arrives in time for my trip up north.

Yes me, but I've seen you copy too. I went to pick it (my copy) up at Faansie's place (and saw yours on the pile) because I couldn't wait any longer. This way he and Etienne also make the most money, as no shop or postal service is skimming of revenues.

The book is truly a great piece of (two years!) work. The maps and directions (to and at birding spots) are very, very handy and the single most useful thing is all the 'new' spots that the book alerts you to. The book looks handsome too, with great photos and it has interesting pages on identifying BBJs, cisticolas etc.

What time will you be in GP? If you don't have it by then, don't hestitate and contact me so you can borrow my copy!

Collected my copy from our postbox on Saturday. Great book, I think, Jan grabbed it and spent most of Saturday afterneen going through it. She says we should start at the beginning and work our way through.

Very well presented, lots of new ideas, and details on places we already new about.

Took it to Reitvlei with us yesterday. Saw a Fish Eagle there for the first time near the first bird hide

Just picked up my copy from the Post Office.

To much work that needs to be done so cannot read now but paged through it:
- Great photos
- Good venue maps
- Quality of pages, binding and book overall Excellent

Now to get work out of the way so that I can start reading!

I collected mine on Saturday as well. I also bought one as a gift for a family member.

There is a wealth of information in those pages and Etienne and Faansie have put a lot of time and effort into this book. A big thank you to them for such outstanding work and dedication.

Note that I also saw it in Estoril Book Shop on Saturday - retailing for R204.00.

Now to do some serious planning after Christmas.

I bought mine from Birdlife's Shop at their offices in Randburg for R175.
