Then Im not to sure as to why they fought.....Maybe just a typical marriage??! :lol:

Hoopoes are extremely territorial, and they like a few other birds....Give gifts of food,when trying to win a mate over. Which is why I thought, maybe the male, would fight with the one female(The one he wasnt interested in) when ever she came near his prized girl! :lol:

Not to sure why the parents would fight though! :hmz:

I also thought of that!

My only other conclusion is that both were juvies, with one being older than the other. the fighting with the older one is to get him / her "weaned" while the younger one still required care.

Love these birds - just beautiful.
Always astounds me how lovely African birds are - much more exciting than the ones we regularly see in the uk!! However I was amazed when my father sighted one of them on a beach in northern England!!! But he's adamant he did - unfortunately there are no piccies to back it up!!!

No reason to doubt your dad! The hoopoe occurs in Europe and although many taxonomists split the species into Eurasian and African Hoopoe, they almost look the same!

Probably Eurasian Hoopoe, which is the one that occurs north of Kenya according to Sinclair & Ryan's Birds of Africa South of the Sahara. The paler overall colour and white bars on wing are also good indicators. There should have been a white tail band though.

Some taxonomists consider the Hoopoe therefore as one species with about 9 gradually/geographically changing subspecies.
