One of the rhino researchers saw an interaction between rhino and spotted hyena at the Nyathi waterhole (the one in Addo rest camp) last Sunday night. The quality of the pics is not too good but its pretty unusual to get this on camera so thought it was worth it to post this.

Five spotted hyena were lounging around the waterhole for a while before a black rhino cow and her calf came to drink. The hyena approached and then hassled the rhino, who charged them (both cow and calf charged) and so on for about an hour before the hyena retreated and allowed the rhino to drink.

Megan, I have heard 'talk' that there is a very strong group of hyena in that particular area of the park - and their 'word is law' :lol: Is that really so?

There is a clan of hyena which frequents this area and they have become fairly dominant. They range between 8 and 14 members and have den sites around Rooidam, Gwarrie Pan area.

This is probably one of the major reasons why there are not many lion sightings in this northern area of the Main Game Area lately. It would also would be a strong factor determining where lionesses would keep their cubs - Kamkwa and Gina stick to the southern area of the game area with their cubs.

Indeed nice sighting. Is it unusual for the calf to charge as well? Addo Elephant specific mentioned it, so it seems to me it is rare as well?

Is there need for water in that area? Could that be a reason why the rhino didn't went to another hole, or is it just in its nature to be bossy?

What is the hyena's change of taking the youngster? As the hyena's were 5 together?
