Heading up the mountain back to our cabin on our last evening at GGNP, we noticed the grassland spotted with single white flowers ... these were in flower during the day ... and the following morning when we left for home, there were gone again. What are these called - and will do they flower again the following evening?

The last one is the White Evening Primrose. It is actually an exotic, introduced from Mexico. Some 15 species in SA.

The flowers open at night and close before midday. There is a good reason for this. It is to protect the flower. It is pollinated by moths (as is many white flowers) which fly at night. Being open during the day is not necessary, and exposes it to possible damage.
