Yes Bahamut, for me that was one of two "once in a lifetime" moments :D The other one was with a leopard.

Has anyone seen the recent programm on NatGeo Wild on Hippos?
It was about this man and his colleague who were taking tourists out in canoes on the river, hippo sighting. They came upon the mother and her calf, which went into another direction quickly. They thought it was now safe to pass the hippos. For some reason ( I cant remember) this one guide fell into the water. The other reached into the water to help him out, when the huge bull came up from underneath. The man went into the hippo's mouth up to his waist/lower back. Hippo took him into the water. The man is alive and telling the story. He suspects that the sound of the paddle on the water irritated the hippo ( which can hear both above and beneath the water)
Unfortunately, they did not tell us the injuries this man received or if perhaps he is now in a wheelchair( they just kept showing his face and upper body)
Talk about an experience.

Talk about an amazing coincidence, I am watching this programme as I write. Multi tasking.
Its called "The Dark side of Hippos" and very interesting but what a horrific attack on the canoe.
I certainly looks as if the guide has lost his arm at the very least but was extremely lucky not to lose his life. :?

just a quick question:

do hippos tolerate buffaloes in their pool? I mean on youtube there is a video of a kudu who had run into a pool to get away from a pack of wild dogs only to be torn apart by the hippo...or is an adult buffalo simply to big for a hippo so that they just try to coexist like hippos and crocs?

thanks

Hi ice.

This is an impossible question to answer with a yes or no.

Hippo can be very mean when they want to be. They are also much bigger than buffalo. So they will chase buffalo away from time to time.

But then I have also seen them near to each other in water without any problems! They are not direct competition for each other, and do not pose a threat to the other. It often happens in nature that animals of different species will be close to each other, and this happens between these two species as well.

as I've mentioned before: I would never have asked this question had I not seen this video where a hippo kills a kudu simply because it had fled into its pool...

I've always thought (and read) that Hippos mostly stay in the water during daytime hours so as to protect their sensitive skin from the sun...now, on one of my recend guided games drives in KNP the guide said that no, this were the not real reason, it had only to do with their heart rate which would double if they left the cool water when it's still daylight outside...

so what's the opinion of the experts around here? my guess is it's a mixture of both?!

Hi All,
I noted a picture posted by Jock last July regarding a hippo doing a barrel roll in the water. I've seen this on a couple occasions in the past but last November saw the behavoir at 2 different locations.
Image
This first photo was taken at Girivana w/hole on the S12 west of Satara.
Image
This photo was taken a few days later at the recently refilled Berg-en-Dal dam.
Both were lone animals in the pools and presumably males. Can anyone explain the activity - is it to rid themselves of parasites or some sort of display to warn away other hippos, although none were in the vicinity that I could see. Bond UK

Hmmmm....thats a great question that I should know the answer to, considering hippos are my favorite animal. But alas, I'm without an answer.

Hello and welcome, bondm!

I've never seen that!

If they were both males, it would probably be that they have lesions from a fight with other males, and fish are picking at them!

Normally they go and lie under a bush for a day or so, partly because the wounds heal quicker, but mostly because they have been "kicked out"!

Just my opinion... :?

Strange!
