Wildebeest are diurnal ie active in the day
Shortgrasslands that are suitable for the type of grass wildebeest prefer to eat occur in alkaline and volcanic soil, unsuitable for the deep rooted grasses

Some one else please do the next question as I am now sweating blood ove MWD's quiz

Yes, I think it's a bee!

There is a little question thread entitled "What is this at Orpen", under Webcams, regarding the same pic...

Why is this animal, appearing on the Nossob Webcam (KTP), not regularly found in Kruger National Park?

Well first of all i have to id the animal. Brown Hyena?
If so my theory (having never seen one) would be that they are shy, living in smaller clans than their spotted relatives so are less able to fight off competition from lions etc due to their smaller numbers?

Brown hyena:

Nocturnal primarily
Solitary animals
Smaller and are generally more timid than spotted hyena.

Spotted Hyena would out compete BH, pushing them out of territories, dens etc....Brown Hyeanas are well populated in Pilanesberg GR, which has lion, leopard and cheetah..NO spotted Hyeana...BH doen't do much hunting themselves, and recorded kills are not high at all. So I am not so sure that it is because other predators would steal to much of the food, but because they live in clans and move out to feed alone, the Spotties will harrass and probably kill them due to better strength and numbers. I dont know if lions pose much of a threat on BH numbers at all, as BH would never try stealing a kill, and will eat only the minimal scraps that are left, because they feed (besides scavanging) on ostrich eggs, insects, reptiles, small mammals etc....posing no threat to the larger predators.

Best Guesses?! :D

 Yes, it is the Brown Hyena.

And yes, the main reason seems to be competition with other predators, especially Spotted Hyena. I do think that lion do have an influence too, but in areas such as KTP the density of lions are a lot less, than in KNP.

If I answer this one, do I have to post the next one ?

Quote:
1- Explain How Hyenas Hunt

They hunt by running their prey down (and sometimes cornering it against a fence, or other obstacle). Usually a group of hyena will hunt together.

2- Give one interesting fact about this animal

The dominant female has first go at the kill as she needs to eat quickly to get back to the den to suckle her cubs, who rely on her milk for their first 7 or 8 months.
