This is a quiz that is run exclusively from material retrieved from the SanParks Webcams.

Any photo from the webcams can be posted, and a question generated related to that photo! Lets not just ask identification questions!

Open Quiz rules apply!

1. Why do giraffes bend their knees while drinking?

2. What prevents a giraffe from feinting when bowing down to drink?

Well Giraffe's have ,much like our own, a valve in their neck that prevents blood from rushing to their brain.

As for bending I can only presume that for in order for them to actually get to the water they have to either spread their front legs or in this case bend it.

Q1. Yes. Simply put, their legs and body combined are longer than their necks. They have to bend, since their necks are not long enough to reach the ground (water) from a standing position.

Q2. Kinda! But there is a more important reason ...

What? That they will pass out and fall head first into the water?

Doesn't the bending of the legs also help the swallowing process - the the tummy being slightly lower than in the upright stance?

One of those prepared to drag their names thro the mud types coming in here now with an attempt at answering number 2:

Their high blood pressure - they have extremely high blood pressure.

I'd also bend my knees if I drank from a water trough - it is just more comfy. Never thought about the fact that most animals dont do that

 The current level of the answers are just amazing!

But then maybe I must re phrase Q 2:

The answer lies in the blood supply system of the giraffe. Yes, they have very high blood pressure. The heart must push extremely hard to get enough blood to the head when standing. But this high pressure would simply knock the giraffe out should it lower its head to drink!

There is a special adaption that prevents this! What is it!?

K........ I was talking 'bout Q1.

Now I'm talking about Q2: :D
There are specialized valves contained within the vessels of the giraffe’s neck. These valves work to block the blood being pumped to the brain during the giraffe’s water break. Furthermore, if the giraffe were to see a predator and try to run from it just after bending over, you would expect it to pass out because its blood pressure had dropped so low. Once again, however, the same network of valves saves the giraffe by routing the blood in a way that maintains a constant blood pressure.
(That's what DD said....... :? )

Oops - ok. Suppose the blood pressure would cause a swamp of blood to the brain

DD is correct about the presence of valves in the neck. BUT ... it is not the main "organ" that protects the brain of the giraffe!!

....

Found a fascinating article while Googling for the answer: The Giraffe's Short Neck.

Also found what is hopefully the answer:

Wikipedia wrote:
A giraffe's heart, which can weigh up to 10 kg (22 lb) and measure about 60 cm (2 ft) long, has to generate around double the normal blood pressure for an average large mammal in order to maintain blood flow to the brain against gravity. In the upper neck, a complex pressure-regulation system called the rete mirabile prevents excess blood flow to the brain when the giraffe lowers its head to drink. Conversely, the blood vessels in the lower legs are under great pressure (because of the weight of fluid pressing down on them). In other animals such pressure would force the blood out through the capillary walls; giraffes, however, have a very tight sheath of thick skin over their lower limbs which maintains high extravascular pressure in exactly the same way as a pilot's g-suit

Wow! Giraffes are a miracle of engineering!

That is the secret! It is also called a "blood sponge".

It is a unique (if I remember correctly the Okapi has a similar but only very rudimentary one) and very intricate system the giraffe developed. Basically it is an organ sitting just below the brain, with many blood vessel, which is packed closely together. As the blood pressure increases when the giraffe bends down, the increased pressure forces the vessels closer together. This hinders the flow of the blood by constricting the vessels. This blocks the higher pressure and limits the amount of blood coming through, protecting the brain, while at the same time ensuring that enough blood do reach the brain for it to continue functioning normally.

WHAT A WONDER OF CREATION! :hmz:

Whose next with a cam quiz?

 That's the most important fact, especially for the giraffe!
