All the bush camps are unfenced (the traditional 3, namely Twee Rivieren, Mata Mata and Nossob are the only fenced camps)
The one's I've been to are great, and the others that I haven't get glowing reports. But you can't camp in any of them if that was your intention. If you want to camp in an unfenced campsite then your only options are on the Botswana side at Rooiputs and Polentswa.
If you like to stay at unfenced camps you should have a look into Botswana.
I have stayed at several camps at KTP (Botswana side), Moremi, Chobe, Central Kalahari etc.
Thea have only unfenced one's and the game is comming rather close there. Of course you need to watch a "little bit more" what is happening arround you.....
In December we will come back for some new "unfenced" feelings

Welcome to the forum BushBoy
for me the best unfenced camp in Kgalagadi (South Africa side) is Grootkolk then after Urikaruus, Kieliekrankie If you go to KTP stay some days/nights at these wonderful camps... it's really a very good experience. Each night (and day), big and less big cats and other come around.... and there are some other unfenced camps...another forumites will come to tell about...

I've also had this happened, anne-marie. What you need to do is ask a mod to unlock your older, now locked, trip report and then you can re-load the missing pix. Takes some time to work out which pix (I have a separate directory with copies of the pix that I used in my trip reports, which makes it easier), but it is possible. Good luck!

Hello everybody,
I’ve been a regular visitor to this site searching for info to help planning our trips to the Sanparks however this is my first posting.
This year we’ve visited KNP and KTP, both for 8 days in July.
In 2007 we visited KTP as well and both in 2007 and 2008 we did the following camps :
1 night TR
3 nights Nossob
2 nights Mata Mata
1 night TR
Four our next trip we would like to make it 15 nights in KTP also including the Wilderness Camps Urikaruus, Kieliekrankie and Grootkolk.
When trying to work out the driving times between the different camps I got a bit confused as to where you check in for the Wilderness Camps.
For example : I’ve read somewhere that for Urikaruus you have to check in at TR, now a drive from Grootkolk -> Urikaruus is easily doable however if one has to check in at TR then it becomes Grootkolk -> TR -> Urikaruus which will be a bit of a stretch.
Can someone please supply the information where we have to check in for :
Urikaruus :
Kieliekrankie :
Grootkolk :
Once we have those check in details we can finalise our planning.

hello Anne-Marie,
Thank you, being able to check in directly really would make our planning easier.
We've also been looking at the other unfenced camps, however we've got a 2x4 bakkie and for Bitterpan and Gharagab I see it's recommended going with a 4x4 which would mean a higher rental cost being added to our budget so we'll be giving those a skip.
KTC does look nice but we've always enjoyed Mata Mata and seeing they are so close together we won't be staying at both.
We want 2 nights at Mata Mata and splitting it up in one night MM and one night KTC would involve just a bit to much packing and unpacking.
Barring one night for entering and exiting at TR we always use a 2 night minimum stay, just helps to relax and sit back a little more :-)

I have not heard of anyone being attacked. Dangerous? maybe. If you are watchful and not negligent, there is nothing to fear. Ask wanderw, she had lions walking past their unit, and as long as you are inside, and close the door, they will not bother you, but if you run outside at that time, it is dangerous!
