We are looking for good photos of the spotted hyenas in Addo Elephant National Park in order to develop an identification database.

Spotted hyenas can be identified by the unique pattern of spots on their coats so the photos should show this pattern, as well as any unique identifying features, such as a floppy ear etc.

Photos would enable us to get a better idea of exactly how many individuals we now have in the park, as well as how many males/females there are and what the age distribution is.

Please send photos to meganb@sanparks.org and state when and where the photo was taken. Of course, you might also like to post a smaller version on this forum for the enjoyment of all Photos sent by email should not be bigger than 1MB in size, please.

You have the photos of the female at the den with her two cubs that I sent you last year. If you require additional shots of her let me know.

Tuesday 20h15 before our chalet (35) walking his way next to the fence we saw a big spotted one with more yellow on the back than spots. Unfortunately he did not wait for me to take the picture

This is my first attempt at writing on the forum though i have been reading them for a year or so. We visited Addo last March had a lovely 3days. I have sent Megan the Hyenas we saw at Rooidam just after the gates openen on 23/3/07. We had heard them in the early hours. I'm going to attempt to post one of the pictures.

I have lived close to Addo since the hyenas were introduced, bo into the park quite often and still have not seen them.Well done.

Just found this post, also new to this forum.

On a recent trip to Addo (Jan08) we spotted 6 Hyenas on the Domkragdam loop. They where hunting near the top of the park, close to the train line. There was also a famly of Jackels (5) trailing the Hyenas. It was a great sighting, only thing is that they where so far away my small junky camera couldn't get any clear shots.

O well at least now I know where they hide out now.

I can say that the cold, misty weather made spotting these guys easier, on the same day we also counted 15 Jackels at different locations, it seems these creatures love the cool weather.

Found a den and 7 Hyena near Rooidam on Saterday morning.

Hi Megan, I have quite a few that I will send to you. I just need to find them all.

Any clear photos of hyenas would be most appreciated to assist with our monitoring and research programme. We use the spot pattern on the coat to identify hyena so SIDE SHOTS of the hyena are the most useful type of photos for our purposes.

Im am currently staying in the Addo caravan park (till next mon, having a great time). We had a great sighting of 2 Hyena feasting on a dead kudu they pulled out the domkrag dam this morning. Have quite a few pictures. Unfortunately the internet connection via my laptop is 2 slow to email the pics to you now. but i will do so when i am back in Cape Town, after my trip.
