I will switch the tap off while I brush my teeth, Zax. Will start practising tonight!
I also only put as much water as I need in a kettle before boiling it. Howzat for a suggestion for other forumites!

I already do that BB..the kettle thing....maybe I must remember to make the tea when the kettle boils..not go back and have to boil it again  ...and remember to drink my tea before it gets cold  ...so as to avoid warming it up in the microwave....you see what happens when you get engrossed in the forum!!!

Good idea to help each other with ideas here MN!

What about collecting the water that runs to waste while you waiting for your shower to warm up in a bucket, and using it water ones plants.

Not a bad idea there DB...I used to do that when we had water restrictions here in Cape Town......I couldn't stand to see my plants dying...
But then I replaced them with aloes and succulents...so now they don't need much water. We also replaced the grass verge outside with stones...requires no watering or mowing...now that was a good idea! We stuck a few aloes in ....and I have never ever watered them since......but it looks quite presentable!

Well my pledge is going to be to cut my use of plastic bags. I already refuse them when I'm getting small amounts of shopping (and boy do I get some strange looks) but I always forget my "bags for life" when I do a big shop and I have a plastic bag mountain at home. So that will be my pledge.

Morning guys

This is really fantastic...

Let me also throw in a few - my pledge is to spend less time in the shower - cos that's my fave place to think... really wasteful

What we do about hot water is boil a kettle, make the tea/coffee and then the other water in the kettle gets poured into a thermos for the next person coming for brekkie etc.

we do the bucket thing for extra water and it works great - we even have two 50 liter drums in our garden which we open when it rains to collect water for the garden. It gets closed after to prevent evaporation.

Maybe I will just spend much more time in the caravan in Kruger - definitely reduce my electricity usage that way!

But seriously I already use low-energy bulbs, only turn on TV when there is something I want to watch, use gas for water heating (and only turn it on when I need it so no pilot light burning) and cooking, and always have a lightweight nylon bag with me for shopping so no plastic bags needed, and my garden does not get watered...... Perhaps the first idea was best after all!
