Meerkat (Suricata suricatta)

I'v seen many meerkats at addo a few years ago, they are such energetic little animals always keeping an eye out for preditors. It is very interesting waching them trying to find food(scorpions) in the boiling hot sand of Addo as others look after the kids at home  Its a pitty there isnt any in Kruger :!:

Meerkat pups do not learn how to eat dangerous animals such as scorpions on their own but are taught by adults, scientists have discovered. Researchers found that adults bring dead animals to the youngest pups.

As pups get older, helpers disable live prey for them; finally they coax the youngsters to hunt for themselves.
Writing in the journal Science, the scientists suggest meerkats are only the second non-human animal species found to teach its young actively.

The only other clear demonstration of teaching behaviour in species other than Homo sapiens is, they say, the finding reported earlier this year that ants can help their fellows locate food.

To all who enjoyed the first series, I see there is a new series of Meerkat Manor coming on to the Animal Channel this month.
Wonderful programme. :D

I love the little critters.
On our last trip to Rietvlei, for our forum meet, we saw what we thought were Meercat.

In terms of Meercat, we have a very active rescue group close to where I live.
Once on one of my runs, I met up with someone who was trying to give a rescue animal a home. The biggest problem was, that everytime an aeroplane flew over head, the Meercat would dive for cover.
The other problem was, the Meercat had demolished every carpet.
You just cannot extinguish the wild.
