I saw a small piece of a doccie on the American or was it Alaskan (can't remember) Condor over the past weekend on National Geographic. The Condor did exactly the same thing. Like Elsa said it was to increase the heat captured by the body.

1. Due to the light-colored bill I would've gone with Purple Heron. But I can't say for sure that the light is not playing tricks on the color of it. It is difficult to estimate the size of the bird as well. But Goliath Heron has a dark bill. I would however think that the bill is too heavy for a Purple Heron. I also don't see any dark cap and the under parts looks chestnut coloured. Possibility is good that it is a Goliath Heron.

2 & 3. Very big heron with a dark bill. Goliath Heron.

Agree with WTM and his reasoning. 3x Goliath. The giss of number 1 rules out Purple Heron and the bird also lacks black markings on the face.
