These were seen on the S3 near Pahbeni gate in July 2006, thought they were mating but they were ripping each other to shreds (not literally of course) so it might be fighting between two males??

I wasn't sure where to post this, as I have no knowledge of reptiles.
But can someone please ID this big guy for me. Ran into him on the road near Klipdrift Dam, Potchefstroom

That is a nile monitor / Waterlikkewaan / Varanus niloticus, and by the looks of it a big one too!

I took photos of these guys at Mapungubwe's Confluence lookout in 2008 and sent my pics to Johan Marais. He id'ed them as Platysaurus intermedius cf. rhodesianus, commonly known as the Common Flat lizard.
The ones at Mapungubwe being different from the ones found elsewhere in the country.

Hi everyone!
Could you please help me? Is that a Nile Monitor?

Image

This huge monitor was about 1 1/2 meter long! We saw him on the way to Shingwedzi Camp.

Thank you!

See you in Kruger 2010!
Karin

We came across this Water Monitor on the S30 in Kruger last month that had had its tail bitten off, we can only assume it was by a Crocodile?
