Tamboti - Pretoriuskop is quite a drive! 188 kilometers to be exact! Which translates to about 8 hours driving at Kruger normal speeds (± 25 Km/h)
Have a look at this map, you're most likely to take the H7, S145 and S36 down to Nhanguleni picknicsite for a drink and rest. Then on to Skukuza and the H1-1 to Pkop.
Gates open at 05.30 and close at 18.00 so you have 12½ hours, which means that you have time for sightings and a bit of lunch and such, but not too much. Keep an eye on your watch!

Hint: Did you book a nightdrive at Pkop? You really should maximise your touringtime in Kruger. Not even 2 days is a very short visit to Kruger...

We stayed at Tamboti always in tent #40.It is right at the end of the fence and leaving the side windows of your tent open you really got the feeling as if you were sleeping right in the middle of the bush. If you are staying for the first time it might be a little bit scary to be in pitch darkness and hear all the sounds of the bush (believe me I know what I am talking about ) .
We love #40 , but I am convinced that you got a great view from the tents.
The last time we had a little furry visitor as well. Not with a Sweet tooth, but he/she was fond of our rice supplies. So store away all your food even the dry things.Everything that is not mice proof .

have also rearranged dec trip to include a stay at tamboti..on website it says orpen only has sunset drives, is there a night drive too that available?one that leaves after gate closing? and do all the tents have a perimeter view?

Lovehyena - hi. Tamboti is a wonderful place, you'll love it. We did a nightdrive from Tamboti last year (after our sunset drive was cancelled due to unforseen circumstances) so they were available then.

And yes all tents have a perimeter view, but some are better than others. e.g. Tent #36 has a large tree in front of it that can restrict viewing, but not too much.

I would just like to offer a word of advice regarding Tambotie.

If you stay in tent number 1-4, make sure that you take a thermos flask or kettle with you.
The ablutions and boiling water are rather far and I enjoy my cup of coffee or three in the morning. By the time I had walked the distance to our tent, my coffee had covered a fair distance.

I would also like to comment in saying that every tent feels utterly private. The "economy" class is such value for money.
Yesterday, my alarm clock was a guineafowl sounding in my ear.

Another warning. There were lots of mozzies. Explorer made the mistake of leaving the door open and in no time at all there were masses all over the tent.

I though that they were little miggies.
"Don't worry", I said, "they'll be off soon"
Explorer looked at me with wide eyes, "you don't understand, MM",she said, "those are little angels of death".

We're planning an impromptu trip to Kruger in the next 2 weeks.
Whats Tamboti like in December? My family is a bit worried about the heat-we always visit Kruger in winter, this will be a new experience. (I dont really care about the heat, I just want to go!)

Which other camps are recommended to minimize the "heat effect"?

Hi Roller and welcome to the Forum. If you are concerned about heat, I think the best "summer" camp in Kruger in my opinion would be Berg and Dal - the units are cool and you can eat indoors if it's too hot outside.

Tamboti is on the bank of the Timbavati, and there is a lot of water underneath its sandy surface, which has an effect on the temperature too, but, as with all things, try it out and then you will know!

Hey folks,

We are getting married on 29th Dec and flying out to SA the next day. During our stay, we're having a week in the Kruger starting with 2 nights at Tamboti in a luxury tent. Can anyone tell me what the privacy is like!! Also, do these tents have braii facilities? I quite like the idea of socialising around a fire.
Any other tips gratefully received....

Hi Steve,

All tents have their own braai on the deck. The tents are very private, however you might want to contact Orpen and ask if you may have number 40 at Tamboti, which is on the corner. If you mention you are on honeymoon, you might get lucky.

I have booked 15 tents at Tamboti for Jan 09 in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary and to get all family together to be with me when I start my journey for 1 year.

I need to know if the boma at Tamboti has a communual braai area...it will be a bit difficult catering for 40+ ppl on the little braais at each unit.

There are one or two portable braais , the half 200 litre type .
Possibly the management could lay on a few tables and chairs , as the lapa is fairly basic , no ablutions if I recall .
Does someone have pics they could post and more accurate description of the lapa facilities ?

I would say: dont panic all roads from Tambotie is good!! The H7 is an amazing road, but again best chance is EARLY morning and late afternoon. The road to Tambotie is quite good, saw wildebeats (gnu's) giraffes impala and 2 male lions there (the 2 lions on nightdrive). The corner of the Tambotie raod and the H7 is quite open and flat. My advice is, early morning, first turn towards Orpen, check out the dam, then head back. Never give the N'wamatsatsa waterhole a miss, as its close by I founf the s106 a bit quiet, but some see amazing stuff there.

I certainly would try the s140, good road for sable, head back to Muzandzeni, and turn on the s126...also a excellent road according to Krugerstaff Personally find the upper part of the 36 dissapointing. Dont miss out bobbejaankrans and N'semani, they are awesome! Have driven the s39 once, but only find the upper part animal productive, it's however a scenic road, a must do once I dislike the s40, find it bumpy and boring....but other may have a different experience.

Again, no bad roads from Tambotie, but apart from the '@@ rule' early morning late afternoon does the actual trick for me

Comming from Zambia is quite a haul. For my 5 cents worth, I would say that Tamboti is an idealplace for you to stay (Just going with what everybody else says about it). We will be staying there for the first time at the end of April 2008.

There are no shops in the camp, but there are shops in other camps where you can stock up.

It may be a good idea for you to get some of your stuff at Phalaborwa and enter at the Phalaborwa gate. Go from there to the main tar road south, and make your way down to Satara.Just after Satara, turn right and head for Orpen gate to get your permit for Tamboti.

This will give you some great roads and time inside the park. (Unless of course, you have other ideas.)

G@amespotter and Bunnyhugger have give you excellent advice. I'd like to add that a nice trip from Tamboti is to head along the H7 to Satara. Depending on what time you arrive there, you can have either breakfast or lunch and then explore the fabled S100, Then head south on the S41, perhaps if you have time, even go to the excellent Sweni hide, before heading west again on the H6. I'd then head a bit south again and take the S126 Sweni Road to the S36, then head north on that back to the H7 and west back to Tamboti. It can be a longish day, but is one that I've found rewarding when I stay at Tamboti. Have a great trip!
