It is dung balls. Dung beetles bury these balls with their eggs inside. These hatch and the grub grows in to an adult dungbeetle inside this bal, eating it from inside..

These balls were dug up - most probably by a ratel (honey badger). They just love dung beetle grubs, and often dig in to middens and also dig up these buried balls which they locate through smell. It is actually not un-common to see these balls that has been dug up in the bush.

The inner layer is pure dung, while the outer layer is harder, and is a combination of dung and earth.

OK, well done francoisd!

"Kloppies Kook!" is a favourite saying of mine! (Klopperfontein Rules.)

One doesn't have traffic jams, and patience is virtually always rewarded. Also very close for photography.

Possibly the single common waterhole where the greatest variety of species in the Park can be seen?
Have also seen nyala there.

Doesn't have a name, but is a very well-known spot!

DDW, you can come back now, THIS one is tricky, and I've added another firewall to my computer!

Thanks, ZZ.

But the other Kloppies pics belong to leachy.

(These photographers can get quite touchy about credits!)

Lovely pix, Richprins. I used to think I knew the park quite well but some of these really have me stumped. THIS year I am going with a photographic memory armed with two Canons so watch this space when I return

@DDW, totally impressed with your knowledge

Waterhole on your left when travelling from Berg-en-dal towards the Mapelane turnoff?? (tar road)
