Must be a strangler fig - don't know which species though (sycamore?) and the other tree looks dead.

Well done to craigsa for noting that it is some sort of fig , and then to Senyetse for nailing the answer , although you could have just stopped at strangler fig , as it is not a sycamore fig.

I would say you guys are close enough to the location , and it is just north of the Ntomeni spruit , where the river goes past the main tar road .

This is actually called the Strangler fig , or more commonly known as the "Common wild fig" , which very often starts life as a strangler before eventually overcoming its host , and standing on its own .
This one has grown up the trunk of an old leadwood , and it would be difficult to say if it managed to kill the leadwood , or if it just used the dead stump considering leadwood stumps stand so long.

Here is a link with some pics , scroll down to strangler figs .

This is the last of my pics and shows the root system very nicely growing around the base of the old stump that you can see part of on the left .

It is dung balls. Dung beetles bury these balls with their eggs inside. These hatch and the grub grows in to an adult dungbeetle inside this bal, eating it from inside..

These balls were dug up - most probably by a ratel (honey badger). They just love dung beetle grubs, and often dig in to middens and also dig up these buried balls which they locate through smell. It is actually not un-common to see these balls that has been dug up in the bush.

The inner layer is pure dung, while the outer layer is harder, and is a combination of dung and earth.
