Thank you to everyone who has posted so much on Tamboti, I feel like I know the place.
We are going to Tamboti for 2 nights next week. I can't wait, it is our first visit to Tamboti and from what I've read here, it will be something special. We will be staying in a budget four-man tent.
Can anyone who has been there recently please advise me which of the four-man tents has the best view? I would like to make a special request before we arrive.

Nr. 22 is a 4 person tent, and really is the best of the cheepest, so try to get hold of it

Enjoy, it really is a SUPER SPECIAL camp, especially check out the area (very early)where the gravel road to tambotie and marula joins the tar road, really good sightings possible. And if possible a sunset drive, really rewarding in this area.

I did say you were dreamers.... I don't recall you phoning me at the same time to ask for a tent!
I understand tho' Tamboti has this effect on people. Once you've been there you just want to go back and own it!

Vos, I stayed in a 4 man budget tent and it was great.
Each tent has its own elevated braai area and I had fantastic views of the river bed.

The ablutions were really close, and spotless.

I even think each tent has its own baboon.

We stayed in No 22 for two nights and simply had a fantastic time. The view, the bird-life, the trees and bush inside the camp, the sounds at night and the atmosphere made this an unforgettable experience. The friendly staff & the clean ablutions was a bonus.
The first night alone we heard hyena, jackal, lion and zebra calling. We had an hyena at the fence and later a fight in the riverbed which we thought were hyena. I grabbed my light and saw two figures near the far side of the riverbed. They moved like hyena but were very dark. Brown Hyena or Aardwolf?? These are so rare that I doubt it. Was exciting though.
On returning from out first day out at about 5 o'clock, 100 meters from the gate, a male leopard crossed the road and after seeing it move through the bush for a short while, it disappeared into the bush.
This is now one of my favourite camps in Kruger.

I have stayed at Tamboti for 4 consecutive years now, (before used to stay at Orpen and one year could not get place only availability at Orpen) and still believe it does not matter what tent you have, this camp is magic! The night sounds are magnificent. For the first time I have booked the luxury tent for SO and myself and the budget tent for the girls and friends. Cant wait to c what difference that makes as walking to the ablutions at night through the trees was quite scary!

Tamboti camp is one of the best camps in the park - you feel one with nature. It's amazing. I havent seen much around the fences at night besides Hyeana - none the less - this camp is the the best.

There is a resident honey badger and AWC in camp, and the birding is good with scops owls 'hiding' on branches at the roadside.

We have also not seen much from behind the rence, but the area up to the tar road has produced quite a lot for us.

Wow! Never seen the Honey Badger, maybe with some luck in August we will - I do remember though having a very close encounter with the baboons last year - thinking back now it was rather funny. I do agree with you about the birds..... Tell me - where is the Hide at Tamboti - I always read about it but have never seen it - wanted to venture around for it last year but after the scene with teh baboons decided to stay put.

If you walk west on the 'path' from tent no 1, i.e. away from number 2, you get to the hide in about 50 metres. I have never found anything there except for a lonely saddle billed stork. They need to do serious 'gardening' in front of the hide. It is not well placed unfortunately.

The honey badger is seen at night sometimes when raiding bins. It is a very dangerous animal, and often fights off lion and leopard, so keep well away from it if you are lucky enough to see it.

how long will it take from Skukuza to Tamboti?

About 120kms, you will have to check in at Orpen then go back about 4kms to Tamboti, would take me about 6 hours depending on sightings.

We stayed in Tamboti for the very first time , two weeks ago.
Stayed in No 23. Very very nice. However 23 have clear view of No 22, and vice versus. It would be ideal for 2 groups of friends to stay together in the two tents.

All I can say is, magic magic magic MAGIC .
What a blast.
Wish there were more tented camps like Tamboti within the same price range as well.

PS. -Each bed have two nice woolly blankets and we found that more that enough.
