Hi all

I had this question long time ago at Ecotraining, thought i would pass it on.

How do you tell the difference between a leopard cub and lion cubs spoor?

all i can come up with is that the lion spoor has unmistakably large pug marks compared to that of the leopard. The leopards spoor is more compact and smaller.

I agree with jonty-the leopard spoor is smaller than the lion spoor.

I would say the leopard cubs' spoor is smaller, and the lion cubs' spoor is more deeper / better visible, as it is heavyer.

A leopard cub has more oval-type spoor whereas the lion cub has more round-type spoor. Or does it perhaps have something to do with the dew-claw?

A leopard and lions cub is very similar and extremely difficult to tell apart from the spoor itself, I think as they grow bigger then definately we can look at the size of spoor etc, but as young cub at a few months old, its best to think laterally and look around, and see the spoor of whats surround this cubs spoor an thus identifying it as a lion or leopard, as the adults spoor you can confirm, as well as a leopard cubs spoor been seen with 1 adult leopard spoor, and a lion cubs spoor been seen with perhaps a few lion adults spoor.

What is the difference between a Rhino and an Elephant spoor?

Great idea BM!

A rhino spoor has three toes with broad stout nails while an elephant track is round and has no toes.?

Correct except in an elephants spoor as far as i know you can see toes. But an elephants footprint is more rounded compared to that of the Rhino.

I love the quizes so i try my best to keep the quizes running and interesting to all forumites!

It is very seldom that you can see any "toe" marks on elephant spoor, since their toe nails are lifted above the contact point, and in fact they often loose some of these nails. This is one of the reasons why it is difficult to tell in which direction an elephant moved.

The front foot spoor of the elephant is indeed rounded, but the back spoor is more elongated.

Why are the pad imprints (spoor) of hares not well defined?

Because of hares, I mean haires, I mean hairs.
