Highlight Troubles

Unread postby arks » Thu Dec 21, 2006 3:16 am

Have you noticed that once you have posted a highlight from the webcam page, whenever after that you want to refresh your webcam page, you will automatically post another (usually blank) highlight. The way around this is to close your webcam page before you refresh and/or open a new webcam window and refresh there, which does not (at least with my browser) force the unwanted highlight when you refresh the page. HTH — altho in fact most of those who post such "highlights" don't appear to ever actually read the forums :(

Thanks, Arks - this is quite right - it is how form submission works.

If you refresh the page after submitting any form on the web, the browser will alert you that it is going to send the info again and that is where the users need to pay attention. This can happen even when shopping online, so do not ignore these alerts! Select the "Cancel" option of the alert.

Or instead of refreshing the page after submitting a highlight, rather click on "Go" in the address bar. That way it will reload the page, without taking prior activity into consideration when reloading the page.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of the "highlight" alert, admin 8) Unfortunately, I don't think that most of the camwatchers ever read forum posts and they're the ones posting the repeated "blank highlights". Part of the "problem" here is that they also don't realise that the cam pic is updating, even while the time stamp is not. Is there any way of putting that info on the webcam pages? I've found that many of those newer members (those who DO also read the forum) did not realise this about the time stamp (it was explained when the satara cam first came on line, but not since) and assumed that if the time stamp wasn't updating, then neither was the cam, and so were refreshing constantly — and often also posting those blank highlights. I guess in their determination to get the latest cam pic, people just ignore that warning when they refresh, because we continue to get these blank highlights with great frequency :(

Perhaps you can put a (prominent) link on the webcam page, directing camwatchers to read an explanatory post on the forum that will explain these workings of the cam page to all new members. That might help a lot with eliminating the number of blank highlights we continue to be getting. I'd certainly never have known that the "submit highlight" feature functioned as a "form"

I have the same problem...I do not refresh the page, but close it and open again in a new frame...so far no one has answered my question as why it appears that there is no activity at the waterhole, when I have clearly seen elephant, zebra, impala, warthog, and a bird (which I would like to believe is a Marshal Eagle)...

I'm not sure what the problem is. :?

Is it posting highlights? If your connection or the server is slow, there might be some lag, resulting in the highlight at the bottom of the page, showing something else than you submitted.

Little trick you can use to make sure your highlight is the one showing ... I open another window and use this address to check the live image :
http://www.sanparks.org/webcams/satara.jpg

By pressing "F5" .. you refresh the image and will show you what is the latest image on the server .. if you submit the hightlight then it should show the correct one.

You only have that option when you are logged in. If you open the webcam first, and then a window with the forum, the window where you have the webcam showing does not know you are logged in. Close and reopen should work.

Hi Wildheart
As I understand it you must log in first, before you open the webcam. Then the Save as latest highlight button will be under the web cam picture
