I'm presently going through old slides from my first KNP visit in November 1984. Can anyone help me with an ID for this plant?

Hi Arks

The photo is rather vague, but it looks like Cleome angustifolia (Yellow cleome, Peultjiesbos). It is a beautiful and common flower in KNP. It actually rather resembles an elephant on closer inspection. You can see the two "tusks" etc.

Yes, I agree with Imberbe. Yellow Cleome is one of the more prominent species in the Park and is quite easy to recognise once you get used to them.

Thanks, Imberbe and MWD. I've only seen this plant on that first KNP visit (November), probably not been the right time of year on my other visits (March, April/May, July/August). I'd always thought it looked like some sort of wild orchid, but I'm delighted to know just what it is! 8)
