So the time has come to contemplate shelving my trusted Canon 450D. It has served me well since purchased in 2008. Boy have we had some magical moments in the KNP. Just look on the TR's written by SurfCindy and you'll see some of the pictures.

Now the question is this: Which of the Canon camera bodies do I 'upgrade' to? I'm loath to go for the 60D and more tempted by the 7D. The 5D is a tad pricey. My 100-400mm lens would love appreciate either. The 7D body I can source for circa £750 or R12k near me. So my wallet and head is nudging in that direction.

Is there any advice going on which to get?

I've heard nothing but good things about the 7D and if I was upgrading that's the one I would go for.

Have you checked out DPReview? They do in depth reviews and their Canon DSLR forum used to be fairly active so may be worth checking out.

Are you planning on using the camera mostly for animals, or also for sunset or mostly birds?

I would not go for the 7D. Were price a consideration I would indeed go 60D, very nice body. But I would far rather have the 70D if lots of birds. If there are mainly larger game and some landscape, I would consider the 6D. The 100-400 will work well on both.

If you are really serious, perhaps consider a second hand 1D4?

Thank you Saraf & MxM for your posts.

Saraf- I'd forgotten about DPReview and I'll consult for some advice. MxM you also make a good point. I think I'll end up testing both the 60D and 7D before making my final pic. I'm trying to get more in to my birds so that might also slant it to the 7D.

Do either of you use or have you used the mention cameras?

I own a 60D, have used a 7D, (also own a 1D4), have only seen reviews on the 70D. If birding is somehthing to keep in mind, I would certainly consider the 70D as first choice and 60D if price is a concern over the 7D.

Not sure if it will help you, but I have written about some kit in my TR:

If you have any specific questions, please let me know?

How are we feeling about our camera choice at the moment?

Although it's the oldest body in the current Canon line-up, it's still a very good piece of kit, with a superb frame-rate, (bettered only by the 1DX !) so, if you can source a 7D for £750 then I would say it was a no brainer!

My 100-400 will be permanently attached to my 7D when we're in Kruger in 2 weeks time! ( I also have a 5DII which I'll be taking with for use with shorter lens for wider & landscape images...)

You mention a 5D series as an option. One big thing to bear in mind is that all the 5D's are full-frame, so you will lose the benefit of the extra (effective) reach of your lenses, and they have a much slower frame-rate than the 7D...

A small factor, but could be costly; the 60D & 70D take SD cards, whereas the 7D will take your existing CF cards from the 450D...

Good luck with whatever you opt for...

Cheers;

Lee

Hi all,

Sadly I've not yet been able to take the camera bodies our for a test so it is still undecided. :wall: :wall: Work has bested me over the last two weeks. :slap: :slap:

Let's hope for better luck this weekend. :cam: :cam: :cam:

Let us know how you go, Riannf31. I am also in the same boat: Canon 450 D and wanting to upgrade, but the choice and price makes me opt out for now....I think! :?

An interesting perspective on older cameras here

So I have done my testing. The 7D is a very good camera, but the Compact Flash does put me off. I have SD cards currently and having to get Compact flash cards increases the price.

I tested the 60D as well and I'm inclined to play the waiting game for now whilst the price of the 60D reduced a little. The added benefit will be that no memory cards are necessary as I have more than enough SD Cards to hand.

Until then I''ll be aiming and framing with by trusted 450D.

I upgraded last Christmas. Also had the 450D and then bought the 7D extra. Very happy so far! My 100-400 lens is attached to it permanently, while I now use the 450D with my shorter lenses. I also love the birdies. You can check my TR's for some photos I took.

Riannf31,

As a 7D user I do not think you would regret the purchase. I have upgraded several times over the past years. I started with the 20D, then upgraded to the 30D and on to the 40D. About two years ago I bought a 7D and LOVE it. I thought about the 5D for a full frame, but the fps rate was so much slower. I ultimately bought a second 7D body to avoid changing lenses repeatedly. Prior to my last trip I purchased the 100-400mm lens and it performed superbly on the 7D body.

Good luck!

Daron

Hi All,

There has been much debate and many internal conversations     , no I'm not going Cuckoo yet, but getting close.

A friend here in London has alerted me to an e-retailer and they are selling the 70D for £780.00 (circa R13k depending on Forex rates). That to me is a very good deal so I'm taking the plunge. That means I can then use this brand new camera in Dec and May.

If not for this -eretailer I would have waited till next year untill the mainstream outlets had reduced the pricing and allowed me more time to save.

Suffice to say that I'm     and getting ready to :cam: :cam: :cam: :cam: :cam:

I'm also looking at getting DSLR and 70D is currently quite a bit in front in the decision race. I was thinking about 7D and might still go there if the price drops in the near future.
