Well, yes, averages are of course just that: averages. And yes, it does get very hot in Kruger at times, and humid as well. As somebody who spends quite a bit of time in the Luvuvvhu valley in summer I can attest to that.

The absolute maximum temperatures officially recorded at Skukuza between 1960 and 2001 are as follows :

January 43.0°C
February 45.6°C
March 42.0°C
April 41.3°C
May 39.2°C
June 35.3°C
July 36.4°C
August 38.0°C
September 42.6°C
October 43.6°C
November 42.8°C
December 42.4°C

So these are the highest temperatures measured the proper way at Skukuza in each month during that period.

We finally persuaded my mother to join us on a December vacation to Kruger!! Oh happy day!!
It has taken a very disastrous holiday to Sun City this year to tip the tables for Kruger next year. Thank you Sun City!!
We have a family business which closes over the December holidays. So it just works out best for all of us to go during December.
Now, we have been use to going in the summer months since 1993. But as time moved on and Moeksie got older, she despises the heat and the bugs and and and... .."my feet swell terribly!!" the never ending moan!
So, the reason for my post - do you guys have any good tips on staying cool in the summer which could just turn this Moeksie of mine's frown into a smile :P

We are normally winter visitors to the park BUT we visited last December and are booked for this December as well, in 2012 December we stayed in Pretoriuskop for 5 nights, it was hot with 2 days being very, very hot. Make sure you check your cars aircon before venturing into the park in December, ours packed up and we almost died in the midday heat, keep lots of water on hand (keep yourself hydrated at all times), go out very early for a drive and then again at about 4pm again, the rest of the day you can chill in the shade at the pool or at your accommodation, a wide brim sunhat is also a must

  how do you get the standing fan to blow cool air when it is boiling hot? I read somewhere about a wet towel on the fan, is that true or did I get it wrong??

TD I can't answer that particular question, but hopefully some one with that knowledge will help you.
However I can tell you that we have been at the cottage in Phala during a power outage, when it was 45c, so no aircon, no fans!!!!!!

I got my beach towel, thoroughly soaked it in water, wrung it out, then covered myself with it............kept me cool a real treat!!!

I have found that if you put a 2L bottle of frozen water in front of the fan, the air is chilled! I sometimes put two bottles of ice in front of the fan with a spare couple in the freezer for potential replacement.

Crested Val and Graham_5000. thanks for the tips, we are going to try them out, have read all 7 pages of info and tips, I am going out today to buy a spray bottle and I am also going to pack in small hand towels so we can wet them and use them to put around our necks, this is one of the reasons why I love the forums, a question never goes unanswered :D :D :D

I was on a day-drive yesterday in an open vehicle (so no aircon!) with a bunch of international tourists not used to our heat and the temperature reached at least 43C. It was scorching. I had taken a little spray-bottle with me, and it saved the day. We kept it in the cool-box and when empty filled it with the cold melt-water in the box. It was liberally used after a little hesitation at first!
