Carol g, Phokojwe,Pumbaa and gatita Thanks for staying with me and for all your complements

Time to take the detour road (not that we have any other option!) S106 lets see if you live up to your “bad” reputation!! Corrugations were not to bad but we must have caught a lucky break in terms of when the road was graded. We stop for coffee and a rusk at what used to be the pan at Rabelais, and while sipping the good stuff watch a Saddle-Bill walking around.
Image

Time to move on and not much further on the S106 an elegant Jerry nibbled on some leaves right next to our car. So gentle and graceful!

Image

Now the opposite of elegant and graceful is graceless and inelegant. That pretty much sums up up the scrappy fighter that we call Honey Badger!!

We watched this little guy fighting with something for about 10 minutes!

The rest of the drive to Satara was pretty uneventful the usual sightings of Zebra and Wildebeast along the way and after running in to check the sightings board at Satara we decide to try Timbavati as a picnic spot of the day.
Image
Another African Hawk-eagle just before stopping for a toasted sarmie (done in the skottle for a breakfast flare) Emptying the bladder and a leg stretch before hitting the road again.

One of my favorite drives is the S39 along the Timbavati River. We see an ou grote that looks pretty chilled and decide to go slowly past him to prove to the girls that not all Ellies are angry..... No worries until we get next to him. Dun-Dun-DUUUUUUN!

Happens again!!! Fortunately this time he was behind us when he started to make a charge at the vehicle. Much easier retreating out of harms way when you are facing forwards!!! Image
Managed this photo when he was still next to us. When those ears flapped forwards, hubby decided time to get a move on!! Now the girls really don’t trust the grey ones!!! :hmz:

But around the corner is a much friendlier “Big” Animal. Gerry the Giraffe.
Image

A very gently Bush Buck enjoying the river view as much as we are!Image

Taking these kind of loops down now are a scary prospect incase we find an Ellie lying in wait for us!Image
Oh well keeps the adrenaline going!

Instead we find some lovely Zebra’s on our way back to Orpen which calm us all down!Image
Nothing like a baby to really bring out the cute factor!
Image Back at Orpen we grab a bag of ice and pour some G&T’s enjoying the animal life back at camp.

Our view of the Waterhole
Image
and our entertainment for the afternoon!Image

After a Siesta Image and some swimming Image for the girls we go on an afternoon outdrive along the H7 Image

Our first sighting is a Side-striped Jackal. First time I see one of these and he is quite different to the usual BBJ.
Image

Our Drive takes us all the way to Nsemani Dam where we loop back towards Girivana along the S12 where some Buffalo Soldiers await us.

A few rays of sunshine breaking through the clouds reminds us that this spot is one of our favorites in the park. But before we are late for the gate we need to head back to Orpen!

Imagine our digs for the night was here at Rabalais!
Image

That night we had some fun trying to get a family picture around the fire!

Sunrise in Africa never disappoints and this morning was no exception. Surise over the Orpen Waterhole.

Breakfast time for some Zebra chewing very well!
Image

This little buck was minding his own business and hoping for another day of survival in a Park where predator is King!Image

Our first order of business is coffee and dipping an Ouma while watching the sun rise along the H7 Image
just before where the road is damaged! Image

Something I had never seen before was a Saddle-Bill at the top of a tree!

A detour up the S41 and so much water around makes this stretch of road seem almost unrecognizable to us!
Image

Plus today must be our Saddle-Bill Stork day!
ImageImage

This must be the trip where we see terrapins behaving strangely.... These two riding the crocodile wheel of danger! Image

Gudzani Dam still showing signs of the floods.
Image

Time to get serious and find some cats on this trip! When in scarcity hit the s100 and something should happen right? That is the theory. Usually the legend holds true for us on the S100 and it is almost like you are cheating when you spot a lion on this road!

And yet again we are not disappointed...

Many cars stopped to watch the 10 or so lions of what must be part of the Mega Pride in the area. Some of them were ready for action

Image

and then some ladies preferred tanning their tummies!

Image

All in all it was fantastic to see our first Lion of the trip and we felt very vindicated for taking an old favorite road! Not much further we saw a very “stinky” old gerry with some interesting ossicone problems!

ImageImage

After a great day exploring the central part of Kruger we are back at Orpen enjoying our waterhole and an early braai! This is the life I tell you.Image

That night or should I rather say early the next morning we saw why we had been loosing avo’s to honey badgers despite all our efforts to lock them away.... :hmz:

Awakened from a very deep sleep by what can only be described as a throw and rock concert in our kitchen we peeped out the door. Definately NOT a cat burglar, the noise was a giveaway. Suspecting and confirming the offender... MR HONEY BADGER.

Too afraid to to go outside I “periscope” my camera for a few shots out the door so sorry about the lack of photo quality in the pictures.
Yip these Kruger bandits have figured out how to “jiggle” the locks from the top and with luck the cupboards open and they get to feast on whatever goodies you have in there. Apparently Avos are a HB favorite!

The tight rope walk to the “weak spot”.
Image

The “Lean over and Jiggle” with my long nails!

Image

The grab and run!

Leaving your kitchen in a shambles!!!!

Phokojwe, hilda, Pumbaa, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, barryels, Carol g, Kaapsedraai, isinkwe, Crested Val, tent dweller, Meandering Mouse, Heksie , cheetahlady

Thanks for all of your great comments. Those HB sure are clever and ingenious!

20 September
On this trip we do something a little different on “pack up” day. Instead of waking and packing up we get everything semi ready the night before and then do an early morning out drive returning at about 8:30 to pack up and move to our next camp.

We leave early to our usual coffee spot just before the break in the road on the H7. Listening to the peaceful surrounds and sipping our warm liquid gold.

Must be the most awesome Honey Badger luck because who do we see as we start the ride back?

Image

The usual suspects hanging out at the Tamboti turnoff.
Image

A quick pack up while the girls have their last tree climbing at Orpen and we pile into our rental and head off to Olifants. A long trip ahead and sad hearts at leaving Orpen behind but knowing that Olifants holds such special memories for us.

Since it is still early enough we decide to detour a little way down the S36. This time hubby had a feeling since years ago when staying at Talamati we had great luck on this stretch of road. Sure enough in the distance we spot a couple of lazy golden kitties!

Image
Image
Too far for decent pics but we’ll take them anyway they come!

After a toilet break at Satara it is up the H1-4 we go. Once again the fullness of the dams bring about a landscape completely changed to previous visits.

Ngotso Dam
Image

Driving past the usual herds of Zebra and Wildebeast we leave the Mixed woodland and sweet grazing behind for Rugged veld. Slowly what you see and how much of it starts to change - including the amount of vehicles on the road!!!

H1-4 Olifants River Crossing

The river bubbling and gurgling by below us.

On the far banks some Kudu enjoy the refreshing river on this hot day.

The girls enjoyed stretching their legs and the view!!!

Arriving at Olifants is like coming home after being away for a long time.  Unit 18 is our designated home for 3 nights.  What a lovely spot.  Right in the corner with the most exquisite view over the river. Your kitchen and couch over looking the river and now our favorite spot to sit and relax.  This is the life!  Not only the sights but the sounds.... Oh the birds, running water and hippos cranking up natures band.  Life cannot get any better.

The Best Beer Location in the world - Olifants Rest Camp Unit 18
Image

The girls playing below the unit and our fire going we are just too happy to still be able to be in Kruger for 6 nights!!!

21 June 2013
Our day to restock on fresh supplies! The plan is to head into Phalaborwa and grab some fresh food for the second half of our stay so we have an early start out of Olifants. Appropriately our first sighting is of an Olifant!

Image

Next we spot a Fish Eagle on the H1 -5 over looking the river. Now this is a creature that lets you know you are in Africa and home just by its call!
Image

Some more “Buffalo Soldiers” duking or should I say horning it out!

Image
Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival.
Image

With a baby dagga boy watching them for tips because one day when he is older and stronger he might need them!Image

Our journey for food takes us along the H9 Letaba Phalaborwa Road. First traffic jam up in the North and look who is hanging around??
Image

That is what I call CUTE!!! Then Mr Cute’s sibling decided to have a taste of our car!!
Image

I love him!

Image
This face is just to adorable!

Mum doesn’t really worry about them too much! She is enjoying a snooze in the road!

Somewhere along the H9
Image

We take a detour on the S131 in search of the wild dogs of the North but all that was to be seen was this big guy enjoying the cool water at Ngwenyeni.

Heading out of Kruger is like traveling into another horrible world. Suddenly there is just people everywhere and parking issues.  Shopping malls etc.  Yes this is our everyday world that now seems so foreign since we are in complete Kruger mode.  Literally we do a trolley run and spend as little time as humanly possible before heading back into our screen paradise. Hello and Good Bye Phalaborwa in under an hour!

Waterbuck skipping across the road (H9) .  Ah yes back home.  Those pointed toes earn her extra points in the graceful department!
Image
Back at Olifants we unpack our groceries and settle in for a late afternoon of watching the sun go down. Image
Fire going and kids playing around us while we get some more photographs for our memories! Image

Isn’t this a view to die for???

Another family spending time together at Olifants!! A Jerry Family and our family!Image

After the girls have gone to bed we stay out around the fire and enjoy the full moon! It is so bright out you can still see the river. I tried a few experimental shots.

We are taking a little southern exploration today and at the Olifants River Crossing we see a family of Babs on the road so no getting out today!!! A different kind of Hitch hiker on his mom’s back! Image

This one was trying his tightrope skills....
Image
We hit the Ngotso Weir road and see some eyeball to eyeball hippos!
Image

As you can see there is still spots where the water is dammed up on the road.
This Kori Bustard looking for a snack and his “Secretary” not much further down the road searching for it too!!!
Image
Image
But the one that got away was Mr Bateleur with a prized snake in possession. Only a weak photo as proof of his plunder!
Image

After about 5 km of literally seeing nothing we see another Bateleur eating away at something other than a snake! Must be their lucky day! Once again not a great photo SORRY!
Image

As we get closer to Gudzani we see a Buff with a sense of humor NANANANANAHHH!
